Dan's Story

Life I loved everything about Hillside elementary. .. As I recall, the Junior High years were absolutely miserable for me...Following a blow to the head(concussion) during a swimming pool accident in the summer of my 6th grade year, I became withdrawn, depressed and eventually in the ninth grade got anorexia (at that time very rare for a male). As an adult, I eventually discovered research that related to this post-traumatic behavioral/psychological connection. However, back then some students even thought (as rumors go) I had bone cancer. In ninth grade I started going to a chiropractor, ultimately changing the course of my life. Eventually growing out of teenage angst, the depression and anorexia,(with the help of the chiropractor) I focused on a greater purpose. Did a three year stint at UNO, transferred to Evangel College and met someone there the last month before graduating. After graduating with a degree in Biology, minoring in chemistry and physics, I then went on to Palmer College of Chiropractic and married my college girlfriend who was from Jackson, Mississippi. I set up my clinic, now thirty two years ago, have three children (One became...Expand for more
a Pharmacist, one became a dentist , who went for an additional 3 year orthodontic program. He now works up the street from us. The last child finished dental school and decided to also enter an orthodontic residency). I am busy with church, my clinical practice (Garvey Wellness Clinic in Jackson, MS) and family life. I have been married now for 35 years, and I doubt those who knew me in Junior High would even think I would be alive. In fact, I didn't think that I would be alive back then, and almost didn't make it. I remember Pam Kline, Vicki Brown and John Nimmer always being exceptionally nice to me during those tortuous years. I was not all there, as many of you would testify. God has been good to me, truly. If I tell you that I feel blessed, it is only because God has allowed me to cope with differing challenges throughout my life. I never thought I would end up in Mississippi. All of my family is still in Omaha, so I visit once a year. Omaha has grown. I encourage all who read this to find their greater purpose in life, and pursue it with passion. I must admit that I hated Westbrook, but those years partially helped to shape who I am today.
