Dan's Story
School days:
I was on the bashful side in those days.
All though a whole passel of yuns come to mind from time to time. Probably very few remember me at all.
I think a lot about back then and how different things are today. We had it so good in comparison. We were allowed to be kids and enjoy our growing up. Unlike the kids today.
Remember all the dances we had? Practically every Friday and Saturday night, there was a dance for us to go to.
We had a place to just hang out, too. I KNOW we were a lot of bother to Johnny and Anna but they put up with us, thankfully. How they did it, I'll never know.
Life......
My Kids:
My youngest qualified for the Coca-Cola international Bowling tournament held in Salt Lake City Utah in August of 1999. He was just turning 14 at the time and placed 12th of youth bowlers from all over the world.
Five great kids call me Dad. Have a lot of pride in how they turned out. Ten wonderful grandkids. They all live close to me except my oldest son, he's in Pennsylvania.
My Job:
After leaving school '60, I worked at Endicott Johnson.
Attended several night school classes at Binghamton High School.
Worked Ithaca Gun Company for a couple years.
Married in 1964 to a sweet girl from Candor.
Worked Vamco in Vestal in 64 to 65 and was surprised finding that Bernie Griffen was there too.
That was when I figured out that my fate was ...Expand for more
not to be a millionaire but to be a machinist and so my work career began forming.
'65 found myself moving to Candor and working at NCR in Ithaca and then on to Morse Chain in Ithaca with an increase in pay. But layoffs were immenent and I was on the street.
Went to Crown Industries, still taking night classes off and on. While there, I got my GED, boy did that help me, job wise. Worked Crown til '67.
Worked a couple small job shops but they didn't want to pay very well.
Back to NCR in '68. They were tight with their raises and my family was sproutin'.
'73, back to Morse Chain. Moved up the senority list and experienced just one layoff and that was in '82. At that time Morse Chain was sold to Borg Warner. Was recalled and spent the rest of my working life there. I enjoyed my job. Retired in 2001 from Borg Warner in Ithaca, as a Master Maintenance Machinist, repairing the production machines, fabricating replacement parts and also built assessories for the machines to perform additional operations.
On the side, I involved myself at one time or another in retailing horse and rider equipment and clothing along with offset printing with an advertizing paper as the main venue.
Retirement:
Just trying to enjoy it as much as I can. Enjoying my grand children. Writng. Play my guitar for the enjoyment of my grand kids. They're the greatest fans, ever.
