Dan's Story

Life Live in Salt Lake City; Still keep in touch with some class of 69ers; Enjoyed working on 1999 reunion committee with Sheila, Mike, Ken, Debbie, Keith, Randy, etc, looking forward to attend the next reunion. Considered attending 2019 reunion, but if I’m going to go to California, I’d rather visit my brother who’s dealing with cancer. School Biggest crushes: In Fresh & Sophmore year it was Pam Davis from Concord High; Junior & Senior years there were a few: Donna Valdez - but she had a boyfriend in the military; Betty Bish; Shannon Huddleston (sneaked her in to the Senior class picnic; Sharon Garcia; Jan Jackson - childhood sweetheart; a cute little Italian from Martinez High but don’t remember her name; misc girls from Ignacio Valley. Inspiring High School Teacher: love/hate relationship with band director Mr. Cavoto. Class most enjoyed: Mrs. Gingrich, Russian language teacher. School Memories: Drinking 6-packs of Colt45 at Clayton Elem School on Fri & Sat nights with Mark Plambeck, Ed Butler, Bill Gallegher. Cutting school (66 days in senior year) with misc friends (Mark Plambeck, Bruce Godfrey, Donna Valdez, Gwen Freeman) to go to SF, Sausalito, other high schools during lunch to check out the girls. Taking karate lessons from best friend, Norm Kikuchi, a Judo and Karate blackbelt. Playing trombone in marching band, orchestra, jazz band, rally band. Losing my virginity in my Junior year to a foreign exchange student from Thailand. Smoking Hashish one time in the back of someone's packed car out in the boonies by Mt Diablo State Park, feeling very paranoid and vowing never to do that again! Yes, I did inhale but stayed away from further drugs. Trying pot one and only time in Senior year at Joe Swicegood's party, and was bummed that it didn't do a thing. Worst Memory - oldest brother Mike, graduated from CV in '65, killed in Viet Nam Nov 7, 1966. Would I do it all over again? I used to think there was no way I'd want to live through that again, but the longer I live the more I think I'd like to take a crack at it. Maybe next time I wouldn't be so tongue-tied around girls I really wanted to get to know, I'd keep up with my music, I'd study harder, and I'd be nicer to people I didn't know. I met some really great classmates at the last few reunions, people I didn't take the time to get to know when in school. College Attended Diablo Valley College and worked full-time the first year after high school. DVC seemed too much like high school with so many kids attending from CVHS. After getting married at age 25, attended...Expand for more
Los Medanos College in Antioch, Golden Gate University in SF, and Weber State University in Utah. Workplace Commuted by bus and motorcycle to Walnut Creek in fresh & soph year of high school to work for a photo-engraving company. Worked at Kinney Shoes Jr & Sr year, and then managed shoes stores throughout CA until age 22. Joined the LDS church at age 19. Served an LDS mission to Michigan age 22-24. Worked at Wells Fargo Bank headquarters in SF for the next 15 years. Moved out of CA in '92 to Utah. VP of international manufacturing company. Then built, owned, and ran a little resturant for 3 years. Worked in administration of alternative high school 4 years in northern Utah. Director of Troubled Youth Facility in southern Utah. Moved back to CA, separated from wife who stayed in southern Utah. For the next 3 years worked as Chief Operating Officer of software publishing company in Silicon Valley, eventually got divorced after 25 years. Then moved to Reno as Director of Operations Coldwell Banker in Northern Nevada. One of these days I'll figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Military I regret not serving in the military. My father served in the Navy during WWII, and both my brothers served in Viet Nam. When my oldest brother, Mike, graduated from Clayton Valley in 1965 he joined the National Guard, then joined the Army, went to Fort Benning, GA and became a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. At age 19 he went to Viet Nam and was killed Nov 7, 1966, the week before he was to go on leave. He was awarded the Silver Star for bravery in action. My other brother, Pat, graduated in 1967 and began working at the Concord Naval Weapons Station. He married his high school sweetheart, Deena Gaudet, had a baby and joined the Navy. Pat served on a Destroyer off the coast of Viet Nam. With a lottery number of #356, getting drafted was not likely. I chose to go to college and work full-time. At age 25 I considered going into an ROTC program, then met someone special and decided to get married instead. Now that the kids are grown and gone, I checked on joining up to serve in Afghanistan or Iraq, but now I'm too damn old and they won't take me. I love this country and honor anyone who serves in the military. Actually I think it should be mandatory for every young man to serve his country for at least two years upon graduation from high school. Current Occupation Worked in management at a chocolate company headquartered in Reno, Moved back to Salt Lake in 2013, and last 6 years doing maintenance at an elementary school.
