Dan's Story

Following Cleveland HS, attended and graduated from Oregon State University, B.S. General Science (zoology, chemistry, political science). After working for a year in the lab at Publishers Paper Company, Oregon City, joined the US Navy after receiving a draft notice. Served in the US Navy Hospital Corps at Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego and Sandpoint Naval Air Station, Seattle (1970-74). Spent 19 days in Japan. Attended Portland State University, 1974-76, obtained Certificate in Public Health Studies (public health administration and environmental health). In 1976 married Christina French and began career with the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS), State of Oregon. We have one daughter, Jennifer (1979). From 1976 to 1981 worked as Asst Regional Manager, then Regional Manager in Health Division's Emergency Medical Services in Pendleton and Portland (76-81). Transferred to the Health Facilities Section (licensure and certification of Oregon health care facilities/agencies). In 1987 position was transferred to Senior and Disabled Services Division in Salem. In 2001 I became Operations Manager of the newly created Criminal Records Unit in DHS. Retired in 2002, but continued to work part-time for DHS until 2004. In retirement continued to keep busy in community and church affairs. With my golden retriever, Parker, we provided animal assisted therapy at Doernbecher Children's Hospital & OHSU, Kaiser Westside Medical Center, Kaiser Interstate Hospital's Radiation Oncology Center, Hopewell House and Legacy Hospice, Beaverton Library and numerous schools (preschool through college) and the Washington County Jail. Parker was a member of the Cascade Canine Crisis Response and Washington County Sheriff's Office K9 Crisis Response Team. We were one of about 15 teams responding to the shooing at UCC, Roseburg, in 2015. Often respond to traged...Expand for more
ies (student/teacher deaths) in local high schools. In 2016-2019 Parker played the role of "Wonder, the Magic Dog" in KGW Channel 8's Great Toy Drive (Nov-Dec). Because of my daughter's efforts, Parker became one of the best known dogs on the internet. He worked as a professional model (ASUS Computers, TempurPedic, Norm Thompson, Target, Pendleton Woolen Mills, ASUS Computers, Sentry Petrodex, METRO Green Gardening, Purina, Carr Subaru, WAVE Broadband). His picture has been on the big screen in Times Square, Vanity Fair Magazine, on the cover of numerous dog magazines and in a Disney Special on the Animal Planet. He performed in seven live theater productions, in commercials and a music video (Canadian singer). His Facebook page had over 1 million followers. In December 2015 one of his Facebook videos went viral (about 7 million views). The video, "Christmas Dogs with Hands," made it onto a national television news program (at least, "they" claim to be a news program). Visit Parker and his "brothers" at ParkerPup.com or on Facebook (ParkerPup). In 2019 Parker appeared in three different musical productions: Liberty HS, Theater in the Grove and Sherwood Center for the Performing Arts. He began showing signs of cancer during his performance of "Legally Blonde" at Glencoe HS in February. We lost Parker to cancer in January 2020. Gill, a 3 yo golden, is now doing the therapy work that Parker once did. I work part-time as a tour director for America by Rail, Inc, East Lansing, MI, conducting rail tours from Chicago to destinations throughout Central and Western US and Canada. For more than 40 years I have been active in the effort to improve passenger rail service and public transportation within and beyond Oregon. I strive to make our community, state and nation (and beyond) a safer, healthier, and more prosperous environment for everyone.
