Dan's Story
Life
Life has been quite different since Mom & Dad both got sick in 2003 --Mom had a brain aneurysm and Dad had a stroke, causing Mom to have some memory loss and Dad to be paralyzed on his right side. But despite the tragedy of it all, as well as the disruption to my schooling and career, it opened my eyes to life and told me to enjoy being young while I have the chance. I still swing dance regularly -- something I was turned onto in 2001 and took to like a duck to water. And despite some interesting adventures in dating, yes, I'm still as single as single can be -- though I'm a lot more comfortable with it now than I was at Central.
School
Wow, do I miss the days at Central. I guess I never realized how great it was until I had college teachers telling me how little I knew and bosses yelling at me in low-paying, unrewarding student jobs. The Friday night basketball games with the quick turnarounds for Saturday morning forensics meets. The days that started at 7 a.m. and ended at 11 p.m. but were nothing but fun in between. The feeling as though we were all working together towards something. I miss it all!
College
I finished my course of study University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in August 2005 after basically taking the year off in 2003-04 after Mom & Dad got sick. I had a 3.79 going up until my first full semester back after the folks took ill, but (hopefully understandably) it sunk to a 3.59 in the time aftwerards. I did complete my major in Computer Science and I'm using it to my advantage in my current position at Quad/Graphics, Inc. as a database analytics processor. Nonetheless, I still do plenty of media-related things and will probably try and hop back into it sometime in the future.
Workplace
After stints...Expand for more
at both of Milwaukee's sports radio stations and four years served in the athletic department at UWM, my main job is at Quad, making sure that our customers' databases are good to go. My side work is where I have my most fun, though, as I do PA for the Marquette Men's and Women's Soccer programs and play-by-play for the Milwaukee Bonecrushers Indoor Football team. It's been an interesting journey, but there's always more in life to do.
As to my work history, I started straight out of high school as a manager for Bo Ryan with the UWM Men's Basketball team -- did it for one season and grew to hate Ryan on a personal level and the job as a whole. After that, moved to the UWM Sports Info Department. Was able to land a job at SportsRadio 1510 in February 2002 and awesomely moved from doing on-air updates one morning a week to producing Saturdays and doing updates everyday during the afternoon drive-time between September '02 and June '04; an unfortunate ownership change would eventually end my employment there, though. Back at UWM, the Sports Info thing did include some good stuff., like doing PA for the soccer and baseball teams since 2001 and play-by-play for the women's basketball on 1290 WMCS, a job that took me places like Seattle, Detroit, Indianapolis and Cleveland. Unfortunately, though, a bad situation in which one of my bosses -- of course, the one I had thought was my mentor -- decided to engage in some illegal activity, getting himself canned (it was something none of us knew about until he got arrested). As part of UWM's effort to distance themselves from the situation, they also decided to get rid of me, even though I had nothing to do with it, just because I had worked so closely with him. Sometimes life sucks.
