Dan's Story
Ran off in 1978 and spent eight years in the Air Force as a Fuels Specialist. Some of the highlights were working with the U-2, TR-1, and SR-71 aircraft. After cross training I got to be the non-commissioned officer in charge (NCOIC) of an emergency services team, the military version of a SWAT team. I gave up that position when a spot opened for a designated marksman. We augmented the secret service and local police and acted as a counter sniper guarding escape routes for president Reagan twice, and Casper Weinburger once, on their visits to Sacramento. It was exciting and boring all at the same time. While still in the air force I attended and graduated from the 11 month long Sacramento Sheriff's academy. After the air force I worked for Sacramento Sheriffs for a while in the North Highlands, and Citrus Heights areas, and the main jail, but I didn't want my kids growing up there. I took a job as a deputy sheriff for Placer County in Lake Tahoe. Eventually I moved back to Chico and became a Paid Call Firefighter for the city while I tried to figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I have always regretted getting out of the service. It's a great family and a great way of life. Just before taking a job with Seattle P.D. I became interested in EMS. I retired from EMS at 30 years, spending seven of those as a flight paramedic for Mountain Life Flight out of Susanville, California. I finished out my associates degree at Butte College in Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic.
Some may remember my green 1968 Ford Mustang coupe, I still have it. Wish I still had the 67 and 68 fastbacks, but nope. My oldest daughter, Danielle, made us grandparents 3 tim...Expand for more
es. She is taking her prerequisite classes for an RN program. My son John lives in Brisbane, Australia, and has made us grandparents 3 times. He is a teacher. My son Matt has made us grandparents 3 times. He works with security systems in Chico. My daughter Amanda just welcomed her first to the family in Wisconsin (go Packers). She is an RN. My daughter Lauren is a traveling RN. Met my wife Leslie in Chico when she was an RN student at Chico State and I was working for Chico Paramedic Rescue. She is now a Masters RN and working for the VA. She is also an Air Force veteran.
For those of you who remember my parents, Cecil and Margaret, Dad died just short of his 101st birthday, and mom died just short of her 100th. They lived with us the last 3 years of their lives.
We have lived in Fallon, Nevada, since 2006. It's 60 miles east of Reno and reminds me a lot of Glenn County, and a little bit of how Chico was when we were kids. They call it the Oasis of Nevada because we're surrounded by desert, but have multiple dairies, alfalfa fields, corn fields, a lake, scattered wetlands, an award winning distillery and a couple of micro breweries. Went back to my roots after retiring from EMS and am a government contractor at Naval Air Station Fallon refueling the aircraft out there. NAS Fallon is the real home of the Navy's Top Gun since 1996. Many scenes were filmed here. It's fun working with the young Navy kids and helping them to grow and not hurt themselves in the process. Lol. There is also a major SEAL facility here, but we don't see them much. Just their support aircraft. I have been off of Classmates for a few years, but just renewed. Drop me a message.
