Earl's Story

Life Personal Life: NOW RETIRED! After over 33 years working Flight Test Instrumentation on the Apache Advanced Attack Helicopter, I've decided to retire to my own projects in my own workshop. (earlsworkshop.com) My work experiences: After spending several years working in Radio Broadcasting in Yuma (KALJ, KVOY/KJOK), I changed the direction of my career, to work more directly in the field of electronics. For over 28 years, I have been in the field of Engineering Flight Test as an Instrumentation Technician and Engineer. I have worked for Hughes Helicopters, McDonnell Douglas Helicopters, and now Boeing Rotorcraft since Aug 1979. All without changing jobs. Hughes was bought out by McDonnell Douglas, and Boeing bought out McDonnell. I have been involved in the prototype and production testing of the US Army's AH64A Apache Advanced Attack Helicopter, and AH64D Longbow, also the MD-500E & F, MD-520N (NOTAR), MD-600N, and MD-900 Explorer commerical helicopters. My role as an Instrumentation Engineer, was to integrate sensors and data acquisition equipment into experimental and production aircraft for testing and evaluation. I have been working with International military customers with specific flight test systems on foreign sales of the Longbow. England, Israel, Japan, Singapore, and Eygpt are among many governments that are (or will soon be) using our Apache helicopters to protect their borders. Hobbies: Computers, Networking, tinkering with cars, Jeeps, Electronic Fuel Injection systems, building high performance engines, street rods, engine swaps & upgrades...Expand for more
, and building computer systems. I also enjoy camping, getting away from the rat-race and civilization. I like to explore on my ATV. There are some great trails and roads in the Bradshaw mountains, the Harquahala mountains, on the Rim and in the Superstition mountains that I haven't explored yet. ***March 2005: I finally completed the courses to earn my Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. ****May 2005: In the UK supporting the British Longbow Apache. I'll be here until around the 15th of June. Chilly here now, its the middle of May and the high is around 60F. I miss Arizona! *****Aug 2005. Back in the UK again. I think summer occured a few weeks back, lasted a few days, and I never noticed it. Here, they complain about the sweltering heat when it is less than 80°F. Heck, in Arizona, I set my thermostat for the air conditioning to cool down to 85°! The weather is cloudy and rainy. I guess old age is catching up with me, the cold humid days make the joints ache. I miss the desert heat. I'm afraid that I will not be able to attend the 30 year reunion this October, I'll be in the UK until then. Darn! ****Spent the winter (2006) at Pax River, Maryland helping out with some testing on the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor, an amazing aircraft. Weather is, once again, too cold for my taste. ****Spring 2008 - Spent about 12 weeks working at the NASA Wind Tunnel at Moffitt Field near San Jose Ca. We tested a prototype helicopter rotor system. Cool place to work! You can read about the project at NASA's website, just search for "SMART Rotor technology".
