Dane's Story

What's up folks? It is pretty 'mind boggling' that it has now been OVER 35 years since we traversed those long hallways at M.H.H.S. It is interesting how the 'life journey' changes and molds a person. Back in 'school days' I think folks would say that I was pretty reserved and quiet. Now... folks would say that I never shut up :-) After '73', I went to Ball State. I commuted with former cheerleader Melanie Boyd and Zetta Hammones before eventually living on Campus in Swinford Hall. That experience probably began the transformation. After B.S.U. I worked in Sales for about 14 years with what became Armour Swift-Eckrich Corp. That was followed up with a stint in the Design Group at what eventually became (once again) Guide Corp. I later moved to Corporate Quality where I was at until the place was closed in 2006. During those last few years, I used to see a few old Pirates such as Joe Jaynes, Dan 'Michelob' McLaughlin, my old M.H. Locker neighbor Le'ann Holding, Steve Tweed (from the Class of 74 behind us) and several others. After several months, I eventually 'landed' at Roche Diagnostics in Fishers. Between all of that work related stuff there has been a lot. I played football for the Anderson Packers and Madison County Bulls. There, we were coached for a part of that time by former Boys Dean, John Dull. I also teamed up with former Pirates Joel and Donnie Pitman, as well as Mike Ginder, Tim Trueblood and a few others. The football thing finally came to an end in 1985 after (what I considered as) a football playing days ending knee injury (MCL/PCL). Following the Packers and Bulls days, I finally settled down', was married, had 1 kid (son) and then ultimately was divorced. I've been flying solo since then. I really only wanted to do that once but 'life happens'. I would consider doing it again but hopefully only once more before I leave the planet. As far as extracurricular activities, the big thing for me has been coaching. That first began back when I believe I was 19. The first experience was Little League Baseball and T-Ball in particular (things have progressed to Coaches Pitch nowadays). The 5 - 7 age group is still my favorite age group to work with. After those initial years, I was able to coach that age group again some years later when my son was involved. My next experien...Expand for more
ce came with coaching the 4th through 6th grade age group in Youth Football. For several years I coached both football and baseball untill it became a bit too much. I coached Youth Football continuously until 1997. In that year I became Head Football Coach of the Madison County Chiefs. I coached the Chiefs until 2003. In that year, the GM for the Chiefs decided to move on to other life ambitions and the team was folded. After a one year hiatus, a new team was started by several people including former Indianapolis Colts RB Roosevelt Potts. This team was called the Madison County Pirates. I have been coaching them pretty much since that time. Some may recall that I played in the band at MH in my Freshman year and then Post-Grad and also in a R&B band with former Pirates Rodney Archey and Dan Beard and a few others. I still occassionally pull out the "axe" and "attempt" to play some. I am definitely not as good as I once was. Still, the experiences gave me an appreciation that has manifested itself as a big fan of the "Smooth Jazz" genre. Consequently, I am a big fan of artists like Boney James, Nelson Rangell, Paul Taylor and Marion Meadows to name a few. I still enjoy the occassional "flashback" to the music that was happenin' "Back in the day". I also have found 'blogging' to be interesting. I never thought that I had a very keen interest in writing but maybe old Mr. Van Horn new something I did not back then :-) I tend to do my writing AND reading during my Winter "Hibernation" months. As far as other writers are concerned, I probably have to say that I am a fan of Dan Brown followed by Tom Clancy. I have read all of Dan Browns stuff to date. Well... I have not yet read his latest release which would be his fifth. I need to put that on this Winters list. For those not familiar, he is the author behind the book to movie efforts directed by "Opie" Ron Howard. That includes the controversial "DaVinci Code" and "Angels & Demons". Other than that, I have just been puttering on and gettin' old :-) I don't know about the rest of "yall" but probably the most irritating thing for me is or was the deteriorating eyesight. Somehow, my dumb ass did not quite get that particular point back when my mom would have me thread her needles ocassionally back in the day. NOW I KNOW! Take care old Pirates
