Daniel's Story
Life
Sandy lives in Westerly, Rhode Island, where he's been for over twenty years, having moved from NYC to work at the Mystic Aquarium (with David Merritt and Curt Horton) in '81. Greenwich Village was home for seven years, while he played and recorded with the band Free Beer (with Michael Packer). The band toured a lot and did pretty much what you'd expect - see any episode of "Behind the Music" - in the seventies. When not on the road, "Sandman" would often work with other musicians as a sideman, singing harmony, playing guitar/bass. He fell in love with a woman who drove a horse-drawn carriage, and convinced her to help him get a job doing the same. From '77 until he left NYC, he drove hay wagons, all manner of carriage, and even a stage coach. There were other jobs at the stable - he was the "cat-wrangler" on a Paul Mazursky movie, a rather inglorious footnote to his theatrical resume (you all thought he'd be a star! Looks like "Finian's Rainbow" was the high point of his acting career). In any case, on the basis of his work with animals, and no small amount of nepotism,...Expand for more
he was hired to train marine mammals in Mystic. That job lasted about seven years, during which time Sandman started playing in a local country band. He left the aquarium and began working as a gardener, quit that band, started another with an old friend from Free Beer. After a couple of years, that band broke up. In the '90s, Sandman visited Brendan Harkin (class of '66) and recorded a few songs. Another visit, more songs. The result became his first-ever solo CD "Horses to Water", released in the summer of '06. Over the last ten years or so, he's been playing with two working bands and his solo career seems to be gaining momentum (please visit sandmanmusic.net). That woman he fell in love with is still with him. They work together. She's the gardener, he does what she tells him. He calls her Honeyboss. When they get home, she still tells him what to do. Sometimes he does. In braver moments, he reminds her they're not at work. Then he does what she told him. Life is good. As Sandman wrote in a recent song "I don't mind getting older, when I stop and think about my choice...".
