Dan's Story
Life
20 years since graduating from Ellet High School, and still going.
After graduation, I began a five-year Electrical Engineering program at Akron U. (Co-op work with the government extended my graduation a year). Following my graduation with my BSEE, I moved to Maryland in 1993 and began working full time for Uncle Sam. I ended up with a job that had me travelling a lot, doing computer system installations and testing at our Embassies abroad. I found I had a real travel bug, and thoroughly enjoyed the countries and cultures I encountered.
I set upon another great adventure in October of 1995, when I married Tonja Foster (nee Johnson '86) and moved her out to Maryland with me. In 1997, we became the proud parents of Nathan, our first little one.
Still stricken with the love of travel, I transferred to the State Department Foreign Service in 1999, and we moved out to Hong Kong, China for almost 4 years. While there, I managed the IT affairs of the communications office at the Consulate there. While there, we discovered that our trio would become a quartet in August of 2002. Benjamin was born between field tours, almost on his brother's birthday. Following his appearance, we moved on to our next field tour: Damascus, Syria.
Damascus. Wow. People thought we were nuts. After the Iraq war started, I began to think they were right. However, we were never in any danger really, despite our proximity to the "action". The hardest part was when Tonja and the kids got sent back to the States on a forced evacutation, while I remained in Damascus supporting the Embassy from behind my keyboard. Tonja and the kids returned a couple of months later. It wasn't long after that that we found out we were going to become a quintet!
Megan Eliana was born the day after Thanksgiving in 2004. Because she was so anxious to make her appearance, I didn't "quite" make it back to the States to witness it. However, I think sh...Expand for more
e forgave me. We left Damascus in June of 2005 for our next field tour: Ankara, Turkey.
Ankara, for the short time we were there, was great. Hopefully we'll get to do some more travelling, but right now we're back in the good ol' USA.
After being back in the States for a few months, we were pleasantly surprised that we were going to be blessed with another little girl! Katelyn Eliza was born 5/13/07, and has kept us even more on the run. Following news of her impending arrival prompted us to buy a house in Parkville, MD. We've been there ever since.
I'm not doing geeky computer stuff all the time. I'm still playing drums - in fact, I played in a rock band in Damascus called "The Part Mentals." I'm also a certified Hypnotherapist, and have been doing side work helping people through hypnosis since 2003. I still love to collect and tell jokes, not all of them good, not all of them clean. :) I'm playing drums every weekend in the South Columbia Baptist Church Praise Band, and lovin' it!
Again, please get in touch. Talk to you soon - I hope!
School
Some of my favorite memories have to do with Band Camp - what a great time. I remember best skit night, where the newbies at camp had to put on skits for the veterans. My first year, I performed Bill Cosby's "Noah" (anybody remember that)? I can't believe I remembered it all. Now my son recites it for me. Cheers!
College
College was great - and a constant source of friends, both old and new. I learned what love felt like, and what it felt like to lose it. I learned never to overtrump your partner's ace and to avoid the Queen of Spades unless I was holding high cards. I wouldn't do it over again, but there were some fond memories.
Workplace
Working for the U.S. Government is often its own reward. I know that the work I do is important, and often get immediate feedback for the things I do. Foreign Service is addictive, and I envision a long life overseas.
