Daniel's Story
Life
I'm now a physician...It has been a long road, that's for sure.... I went to Chico State where I majored in Microbiology and Chemistry...After uni., I joined the US Peace Corps and served in the Solomon Islands. There, I was a high school teacher at the village's secondary school, and community educator (mostly malaria prevention...saw way too many people die from it). While still a volunteer, I volunteered with the Solomon Islands Red Cross to help the displaced people of the ethnic tension that blew up in 1999. I volunteered for that after finding myself in the thick of things. A family I was staying with in Honiara was in one of the villages targeted by the Guadalcanal Resistance Army (GRA). The village was taken over by them, and we ended up in a refugee camp. That's one of thousands of wacky experiences from that country, which in all honestly, I had never heard of before joining the PC. Unfortunately, the tension where I was located, North Malaita, got out of hand. The once peaceful people turned a little sour with the escalating tension, and heavy drug and alcohol abuse amongst the youth. I was evacuated from the area. That was too bad, but it was an amazing and wacky life experience.... After leaving the jungles of the Solomon Islands, I then packed my bags and headed Down Under to Oz. I decided to go to medical school, and went to Flinders University located in Adelaide, Australia. I spent most of my school breaks traveling the country (went everywhere except Perth). ersity of New Mexico. Needless to say, going from Mayo to Alice Springs (a remote Outback town in the center of Australia) to Darwin (a place in northern Australia where you can't go into the water without getting eaten by crocs or stung by the Boxcar jelly fish) allowed me to see a vast array of conditions.. After globe trotting for years, I decided it was time to come home. Currently, I'm a pathology/laboratory medicine resident physician at UC Davis. This is my last year. When I first started, I wanted to go into forensics, but that has since changed (believe it or most pathologist are not in forensics) Next year, I'll be doing a hematopathology fellowship for a year followed by two years of a microbiological pathology fellowship. I am involved in several projects with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology looking at very unique approaches to therapy and the diagnosis of malaria.

Workplace
While going to Chico State I worked at Oroville Funeral Home. It was very interesting and wacky. For a small town, Oroville sure had some bizarre forensic cases (in Butte County, autopsies are performed at the funeral homes by a traveling forensic pathologist); a very unique population... I've worked at Amdal Nursing home in Chico as well. It was very a very intense job, but an experience no less...Did a lot of volunteer work at Olive Ridge Nursing Home in the 90s... Worked at Bruise's Funeral Homes right before moving to Australia...I guess I paid my dues...
