Daniel's Story

Life Left Memphis in Dec. 75. I was afraid that my Memphis State grades would be too bad to show my dad, so I joined the Army. Later, when I had those grades transferred, I was very suprised to find that those grades were a whole lot better than I thought - Dang! Between basic at Fort Ord, and AIT at DLI, I spent all of 1976 in Monterey, California. My subsequent history is still cloaked under classified information, having entered Military Intelligence. Devoloped a conflict of conscience as an international spy, and suffered thru some retribution from the powers that be. And that's all I'm gonna say about that... Thought I got my life on track as an Orthopedic Surgeon, since surgeon ryhmed with Spurgeon; but started getting woosey with all the blood and tissue stuff. After disgust with all of the departure from truth involved with being a lawyer, I settled for a career as the Police Chief of Miami, Fla., but got tired of all the violence! Worked with the DEA, cracking the Russian mob/Columbian connection; but left that job still unfullfilled. Thouroughly enjoyed my stint as a strategist/trader with Goldman Sachs untill a personality conflict with Henry Paulson prompted my departure. Sew I figured something ethereal would be my forte'; and like a flop-transition, I entered the field of Theoretical Physics. Worked closely with Brian Greene and Edward Witten on string theory. Once we worked out the various versions of string theory into a breakthrough M-theory our progress slowed. The perturbative approach was one thing, but the noncommutative geometry of zero-branes was better left to greater brains than mine. The transition from a fabric of space and time back into a source of non-fabric of non-space and non-time has become a hurdle imposing enough to cause all of the non-string theorists to start a bandwagon of poo-pooing string ...Expand for more
theory to revive their pet theories that favor an agnostic/atheistic mindset. I hate controversy and argument, so I left the theoretical physics field and became a barber. Tired of cutting hair, I tried to get all of the Supremes back together and enjoy a resurgence of Danny Roper and The Supremes, as the resurection of old bands seemed to be the latest fad. I'm still working on that... Wish I had known that there would be huge shortage of Geologists nowadays! After all of my lofty and dreamy accomplishments and adventures in life; I found balance as a boring, poorly paid blue collar worker in the hard physical labor/construction/maintenance arena during my waking life. This is the required balance to keep me humble, I suppose. Had brief, unsustainable returns to Memphis in 1979 and 1985. Spent over 20 years in Florida, mostly in the greater Orlando area, but a little bit of time in Miami. When I developed shoulder problems at my last job in Orlando, my boss made me a generous offer to work out of the Miami office, where I could finally progress from blue collar to white collar. Quite tempting, but I made the choice to return to Memphis instead. Vocationaly and materialisticly it looks like I made the wrong choice; but Memphis seems like God's will for me, for now; for reasons known better to Him. Was married for only seven years, divorced in late 1994. I married into a close-knit Italian family, and besides my son, and a relationship with his half-sister; the most I got out of my marriage was that I did alot of fine dining those years, and had alot of awesome authentic Italian home cooking. Returned to sender in the summer of 2002. I currently live in a van, down by the river, often contemplating my life's next horizon. "We are all, each in our own way, seekers of the truth and we each long for an answer to why we are here."
