Danielle's Story
Life
Life is good. I can't complain. I work for the City of Durham, in the Parks and Recreation department as a Masters Swim Coach. I love being a coach and being around athletic people all the time. It inspires me to be a better coach and to be a better athlete myself. Speaking of which, I really got back into the mountain bike racing scene this year. I just finished up my final race of the year in Sheboygan, WI. Starting in 2006, I will move up to the Elite/Expert category and then it will start to get really difficult and I will have to train more.
I'm married to Rob and we have 2 beautiful dogs, Dakota and Taylor. We live in Durham, North Carolina and we love it here!
School
I started at Center Elementary in 1983 right after we moved on base. (I went to Anna Kyle Elementary for 2 months before that while we were living in Suisun) Stayed at Center through the 5th grade, went to Golden West for 6th through 8th, then to Vanden for high school.
I did go to Dixon High School for my 10th grade year because my family bought a house in Dixon and they didn't want to do the commute to Vanden twice a day. So I went to Dixon and met some really cool friends, but then left to go back to Vanden to finish out my high school years.
College
The first thing that pops into my head when I think of Chico State, is racing mountain bikes and road bikes. If I hadn't discovered mountain biking in Chico, I don't think I would've stayed and graduated. Racing bik...Expand for more
es is what I remember the most - and the friends I met from racing bikes. I also worked part-time during college, from my sophomore year until I graduated. I worked in the student recreation center, as a VA for University Village, at the bookstore, at a small mom-n-pop bakery, cleaning houses and pedaling a pedi-cab around. Doing so allowed for me to have spending money during my soph and junior years. But during my senior year and final semester, I had to pay for everything on my own, except for tuition, which was covered by my Dad's air force disability waiver. So I graduated with a B minus average, which made me the first person in my family history to have graduated from an institute of higher education. My family is proud and so am I. Someday, I'd like to go to graduate school and get a Master's degree.
Workplace
Just an update: I'm no longer a teacher, but I still work in the education field. Being a swim coach is a lot like being a teacher, because I still have to plan the daily workouts, and writing those is similar to writing a lesson plan for schoolteaching. I coach adults in a Masters swim team setting.
I have a "side job" that supplements my coaching - working in a bike shop. It's my "fun job" and the money I make there usually goes right back into it because of all the great deals and discounts I get on bike stuff.
Weird how I got a 4 year degree in science and I don't even use it....I guess a lot of people don't use their degrees.
