Danielle's Story

Life As one can see by my college bio I am currently doing my PhD at Kent University in England. I have, pretty much been, indoctrinated into English society(with the help of a few very good friends). I spend most of my time writing up my thesis and writing conference papers. I spend my spare time playing squash and basketball, and practising karate, kendo and kung fu. I have been in a four year relationship with a wonderful man, and we are pretty much together. I am also working for the DSU at Kent University as an Educational Support Assistant, and I will begin to teach classes next term. If anything more interesting happens I will keep you posted, but to be honest the only interesting thing that has happened so far is...more research, more research, a little writing, and well..more research...I take it that whomever is reading this has noted the sarcasm and perhaps has caught onto the fact that I am feeling, well to put it bluntly, rather apathetic about spending the majority of my life in school; however this is the path I have chosen therefore I must take the good with the bad. The good being that I will beable to put a DR in front of my name when I have completed my work (terrific) and the bad, well, the more I delve into my subject matter and spend time with others like me (weirdos and the like) the more I realise that I am slowly detaching from reality. I am finding it difficult to see the positives in this and I am wondering if the positives actually out weigh the negatives, but there is something slightly appealing about becoming a mad professor and since I am on the right track, I think I will, as they say in England, "get on with it". School All I can say is that I enjoyed high school, I met some really good people, and a few wonderful teachers that I will never forget:) There is however, one thing I will not miss about high school, and that was being a teenager, that was tough. -And my school days before high school, well my memory went a bit when I reached my mid-twenties, and I can't remember that far back. I think that I may have to change the "mid-twenties" to "late twenties" now, sadly, but the good news is that all of us are in our late twenties now, so I can share the pain. College Well I had actually thought that I wrote something in my bio..but strangely it has disappeared, or I may be getting senile in my old age. (I am obviously going senile) Anyway...I have said I was going to update this so here goes. After going over to England as an exchange student in 1998, I liked it so muc...Expand for more
h that I decided to stay. I received my BA in 2000, and my MA in 2003. I am currently doing my PhD in Interpretations of Astronomical Phenomena in the Middle Ages, and I hope to have it completed by 2007 it looks like it will be late 2007 now, DAMN THESIS!! Last summer I was involved in an Archaeological excavation on a site with finds ranging from 150BC-100AD, and a few years before that I was involved in the BIG dig which became a huge project when the Archaeologist Trust decided to dig up the streets of Canterbury. Last summer I found some very interesting Iron Age artifacts, an urn and a few tools. Unfortunately the dig was cancelled in the middle of July, which was sad, but it was fun whilst it lasted. I am still writing up my thesis (oh joy of joys) and enjoying life (well trying at least). That is about all from me at the moment. Hopefully over the spring or summer I will be heading to Greece or to Tuscany for a peaceful holiday, and possibly get involved in a few more digs over the summer. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that this will happen, as my work is keeping me too grounded. Well I finally got that peaceful holiday to Santorini, and it was fantastic, now it is only a matter of time and then I am back to the books...well here I am back to the books and looking forward to another year of fun and excitement. To be honest I feel as though my spark for education and academia has been rekindled which is a good thing, as I was growing slightly apathetic, and I was questioning a great deal about my life...but that is all over now and I am incredibly grateful for that, as I was getting a bit fed up with myself...and felt for a slight moment that I was regressing to a strange goth period that I embraced as a foolish youth, thank the gods I wasn't driven to write any dark poetry or completely change my wardrobe:) Workplace Just received my TEFL qualification. For those that don't know the acronym it stands for (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), and I am looking forward to getting some paid teaching work over the summer, although going on a dig would be nice, and "lo and behold" I have been teaching all summer, now I can appreciate all the hell our teachers went through, all the prep work, annoying students, no weekends, but regardless it is one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever done, and I am looking forward to doing this next summer. Military Was thinking about the USAF but I decided to dedicate my life to academia instead and I still question my sanity in making this decision.
