Daniel's Story
Life
Georgia and I will celebrate our 55th wedding anniversary in June 2023 abord ship, visiting Japan and South Korea. Dan will also celebrate his 81st birthday and Georgia her 75th birthday on that trip as well.
We have lived in the Ahwatukee Village area of Phoenix AZ now for 34 years. Georgia completely retired from teaching (UPS-Elementary Ed. 1970) in January 2022. We remain in relatively good health and enjoy nature outings and international travel. Dan is retreated from his full-time office day job but accepted a Brand Ambassador-Senior Advisor position with the Company involves representing the Company at community and industry events around the country and advising the executive team on management and organizational matters and business strategies.
Georgia and Dan look forward to spending more time on family projects and traveling again. We have been to more than 60 countries since 1972. We crossed the Equator last spring aboard ship on our way to French Polynesia and entered the Antarctic Peninsula last winter (it was summer in Antartica and only "0" degrees) retracing the HMS Beagle's route who explored and mapped that continent in 1906. Unbelievable scenes. Saw the Russian and US research stations. We will be visiting southern Japan and South Korea in June 2023. We have now completed visits to all seven continents and all seven seas. So, most of our international bucket list has been accomplished. Still lacking a few places that are not safe.
Career
Dan received the Phoenix Business Journal's "Lifetime Achievement Award" among all Arizona Business leaders for 2020. Attended some great schools; FPHS, Olympic College, and Arizona State University x2. Dan received his Golden Circle reunions (50-year Alumni) from ASU's Colleges of Engineering and Business in 2018 and 2022 respectively. Frequently see and communicate with FPH classmates, Gene Anderson, Gary Hornbuckle, Anne Martin, Linda Shook, and Lyle Haller. Enjoyed the well-attended class of 1960 class reunion at Wapato Lake in September 2022. Lyle spent 10 days with us in Phoenix in April. It was a beautiful 90 degrees during his stay. He got rid of his cardigan the third day! He...Expand for more
had a smile the whole time.
We will be taking a cruise to Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore in November 2023. Some of my Navy time was off the coast of Vietnam, but never "in country." Sargent Haller saw quite a bit of it in 1970...
College
After discharge from the Navy, I earned an associate degree in pre-engineering at Olympic College. Gary Hornbuckle was my roommate as was a Navy friend from Montana. I Then transferred to Arizona State University where I received my BS in Engineering (Electronic Technology.) Met wife Georgia in Psych. 101. The Boeing Company provided a two-year position as a research engineer (held a secret clearance), and then returned to Arizona State University where I worked as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Bureau of Business and received my MBA.
Military Service
Gary, Paul (Simon) and I were raised in small country communities in the northwest, used to getting up early, having chores every day, and we were able to swim at an early age in rivers, lakes, oceans, and sounds, a prescription for success in the US Navy. Ken Denton, Dick Jefferies, and Jim Dovey, from the class of 1960, were Navy men as well. I completed my basic training, as well as my Interior Communications Electricians schooling at the San Diego Naval Training center. I achieved the rating of IC2 (Petty Officer 2nd Class). Gary Hornbuckle served in a US Navy helicopter crew with a deployment aboard ship & to Asia in sometimes hazardous duty while Paul Simon spent his enlistment as a Jet engine mechanic. I had 3 years, 4 months foreign service/sea duty including 3 years 4 months serving aboard three ships: USS Klondike AR 22; the USS Sirius AF 60; and the USS Mattaponi AO 41, including two deployments to the southern and western Pacific and the South China Sea. I am currently a life member of the VFW, and a 34-year member of American Legion Post 2 in Tempe. My two deployments to the Seventh Fleet included a lot of night ops with carrier battle groups and a couple of collisions. Also saw some more pleasant duty in Hong Kong, Japan, and the Philippines. Received "Thank you letter from the Secretary of Defense for my service last year.
