Danny's Story

Life Well, let's see here ... I have a married daughter, Kelli, who will be 27 on June 5, 2005. She's a dental office manager in Austin. Her husband, Skip, is a police officer in Pflugerville, a suburb north of Austin. We all live within a mile of each other in Round Rock, about 25 miles north of downtown Austin. My wife, Anita Bowen Douglas (Miller HS, class of '69), passed away on May 19, 2002 after a battle with breast cancer. It was first diagnosed only a few weeks after our King High School 20-year reunion in 1989. We were married Feb. 26, 1977 at Parkdale Baptist Church in Corpus Christi and had 25 wonderful years together. With her illness in remission during the 1990s, Anita operated a very successful registered child-care business in our home in Cedar Park. In February 2003, I bought a new home in Round Rock mainly because I needed a change of surroundings after Anita's passing. Within the last year, I've started to date again (VERY strange at age 53!). No plans for a second marriage. At this point, it's just nice to have several friends to share good times with. Also, no grandchildren yet, but my daughter and her husband say they'll begin trying in a year or so. Overall, life is good. Anita is greatly missed, but my health is fine and I enjoy traveling, playing golf, tennis and spending some time at the gym. In fact, I need to do more of that. My dad, C.V. Douglas, who was a home builder in and around Corpus Christi from 1950-86 passed away in October 2003 at age 76 after a battle with bone cancer. My mom, Dorothy, still lives in the house my dad built in Ingram, just north of Kerrville. The older of my two sisters, Claudia (KHS '72) lives in Boerne, north of San Antonio. She has two grown children, Allison (25) and Christopher (22). My little sister, Lisa (KHS '80), lives in Kerrville. She and her husband, Wayne, have three children -- Jordan (16), Avery (13) and Madison (6). Lisa is a busy mom who still looks as fit as she did in high school, thanks to running two miles every single day. And Wayne is a dentist. The two boys have high national tennis rankings and hope to play in college. I don't miss the Corpus Christi humidity at all. But in October 2004, I had the strongest urge to drive straight to Padre Island. I left Round Rock late on a Sunday afternoon. Around 9 p.m., I rolled down my truck windows so I c...Expand for more
ould sniff the sea breeze as I passed over the Harbor Bridge. I took a brief detour through the streets of Pharaoh Valley (where I lived while going to King), then hopped on SPID and headed for the beach. It was almost 10 p.m. when I pulled up beside Bob Hall Pier. For the better part of the next hour, I sat on the hood of my truck and quietly listened to the waves rolling into shore as I gazed at a star-filled sky. Then, I checked into the Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort Hotel on the beach. In February 2002, Anita and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary here. Three months later, she was gone. Though I'm not an early riser, I had no trouble waking myself the following morning and taking my digital camera down to the beach, where I snapped probably 50 shots of an incredible sunrise. The instant I turn on my computer, either at home or work, I'm able to relive that morning. I stayed for two days, reconnecting with the city where I grew up, remembering people I had known, recalling my high school days with a smile and reliving the first nine years of my professional life. Oh, and being amazed at the number of Whataburger restaurants. Seems like there's one on every corner. The sand was spotless and the Gulf of Mexico was smooth as glass during my stay. Several times as I walked up and down the beach, I caught myself wishing I could still live here. I even felt a bit envious of those who still call Corpus Christi their home. It's a beautiful place. I was blessed to have spent 32 years here and feel equally blessed each time I return. Workplace After receiving a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Texas in December 1973, I was a sports writer for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times until mid-February 1982, covering mostly high school and college sports. From mid-February 1982 through June 1986, I covered college and professional sports for the San Antonio Express-News. After a one-year break from the newspaper business, I joined the Austin American-Statesman in February 1988. As of now (January 2005), I'm still working at the Austin newspaper as a sports copy editor. I've entertained thoughts of returning to sports writing, but I've grown accustomed to a job that I can totally forget about once my workday is finished. Basically, I'm comfortable where I am, enjoy the people (mostly younger) with whom I work and have a good time.
