Danny's Story
Life
Today our family lives in Beavercreek, OH. I've been married for 40 years and my wife and I have two children, and four grandchildren! I still have family in Lexington, KY and can now visit on a more regular basis then when I was in the active duty Air Force--how Lexington and the University of Kentucky has changed! In my spare time I'm active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Ohio, where I recently completed my tour as State Commander for 2019-2020, Am now fully retired from the Department of the Air Force (Active Duty and Civil Service).
College
After graduating from Tates Creek H.S., I attended the University of Kentucky and graduated in 1977. College was a great time! As an AFROTC cadet I was a member, and eventually commander, of our Pershing Rifles military fraternity. We participated in Drill Meets year round to include Honor Guard for the Governor at the Kentucky Derby. On occasion we also fired off our cannon late at night to "wake up" Downtown Lexington, Ky. Our Pershing Rifle unit also performed the first Color Guard at the first game in the then new Rupp Arena. Something I also did at almost all Tates Creek H.S. Basketball and Football home games as a member of the Air Force Junior ROTC unit. In my Sophomore year at U.K. we "decorated" the statue of Patterson to signify a new school year, much to my surprise a picture of our "decorated statue" made it in the Lexington Herald-Leader Newspaper the next day! Other college experiences are best left unsaid. While on active Duty in the Air Force I completed my Masters Degree.
Workplace
After retiring in 2003 with almost 26-years of service in the Active Duty Air Force, I entered Civil Service. I recently retired from Civil Service as a GS-15 Division Chief at Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson, AFB, OH.

ilitary
I entered the Air Force as a 2nd Lt in 1977 after graduating from the University of Kentucky and its AFROTC program. The first weapon system I was assigned to was the E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft as an Air Battle Manger. AWACS was a great tour of duty. Not only did I see the world, but was able to help deter/limit world-wide conflicts; member of the "Rapid Deployment Force", deployed to Egypt after U.S. Hostages were taken by the Iranians (my longest flight 18.5 hours); deployed to Saudi Arabia during the Iran/Iraq war, deployed to Germany during the threatened invasion of Poland by Warsaw Pact forces, and deployed to Iceland to protect Icelandic airspace. While in AWACS I was selected for advanced flight training and became a Weapon Systems Officer and Electronic Warfare Office in the F-111A and EF-111A (my longest flight was 13.5 hours training as U.S. backup crew for Operation El Dorado Canyon, and 10.5 hours flying in the first EF-111A overseas deployment to Sachon AB Korea in 1985. I was also fortunate during my Air Force career to have three command tours; coordinated the deployments of the first F-117 Stealth Fighters to Europe (Gilze-Rijan AB, Netherlands), Tanker forces to Istres AB, France, during Operation Deny Flight, and 1st Fighter Wing to Cambrai AB, France, during the 50th Celebration of D-Day; a tour at the Pentagon where I supported Middle East Peace talks; and served in Operations Desert Shield/Storm. We've lived in Oklahoma, Arizona, California, Idaho, Virginia (twice), Germany, Texas and Ohio. I retired in March 2003 as a Lt. Colonel while assigned to the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. Without hesitation, I can say it was a privilege to serve with those that on a daily basis put their lives on the line in defense of their country!
