Danny's Story

Workplace My years with the US Army has been very rewarding and has taken me around the World. I live in Germany and I have visited so many countries. I love to travel, my nick name is Mr. Travel. My supervision of 3 Army Learning Centers allows me to use my passion for Army Leadership and my 30 plus years of Army experience to train and educate the young soldier. As a First Sergeant/Master Sergeant I believe in taking care of the soldier. In 4 years I have to retire at the age of 60. I'm sure I will still be here in Germany working in some function with the US Army. As of April 18, 2004 I accepted a GS 12 Deputy Comptroller position,1st infantry Division ,Wurzburg, Germany. As of December 2005 I'll be working in Baghdad, Iraq at the Project Contracting Office managing the Iraqi Military and Police account as a Financial Analyst. I'll be in Iraq until December of 2006. January 2007, accepted GS 12 position with the Corps of Engineer in Baghdad managing the Iraqi Security Forces Fund, largest financial account in Iraq. Plan on working in Baghdad for two years and then retiring and returning to East Texas to build the home of my dreams. 31 April 2008 I'm still in Baghdad after accepting a promotion to GS13 with Internal Review office and I plan on working here until April 2010 at which time I plan on returning to East Texas and retiring. 24 December 2008 Resigned from Government service to accept a position with a private contractor, Michael Baker Company. I just couldn't say NO. My health is too good to retire so I'm going to give it 4 more years and then retire. Military I still remember coming home from work and finding my draft notice laying on the floor in the small house on Elm street where Betty and I lived. I decided after trying to join the Army Reserves to join the Regular Army and get it over with. By mid-October I was at Fort Polk LA. Due to the push for troops needed in Viet Nam by Basic Training only lasted 6 weeks. What can you learn in six weeks?? Not Much. After Basic I was assigned to a new Big Gun unit at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After completing months of training on this big gun we received orders to deploy to South Viet Nam. July 1967 we arrived off the shore of South Viet Nam on board the USS Upshure. 17 days on a ship was almost to much for this country boy. By the way I did get sea sick one time during a storm. I was ever so glad to get off that boat. Everyone went over the side of this ship crawling down huge nets just like in the movies with loaded guns not knowing what was next. We made it into the landing craft and the Navy took us to shore. That day we were told my Gun Battery of 4 Guns was being given to the Third Marine Division. This was really a hoot for the Army, being given to the Marines. Needless to say it wasn'...Expand for more
t a pleasent experience. During that year I had more than my share of fighting. The NVA didn't like our Gun because we could reach out and touch them, more than 20 miles. They shot rockets at us every week trying to kill our guns. I made it through my year and was reassigned back to Fort Sill where I stayed until October of 1969 at which time I received my Discharge. After being discharged I returned to Yukon, Oklahoma at which time Betty told me she wanted a divorce. I joined a local Army Reserve unit due to Mac Law talking me into joining. After I got over Viet Nam, which took a few years and lots of alcohol I started enjoying being a member of the Army Reserve. The unit was called to Active duty at Fort Chaffee, Ark to process the Vietnamize into the United States. Our next assignment was being called to Active Duty at Fort Chaffee to process the Cubans and that was a challenge. Things happened at Fort Chaffee the news media was never told about because the Post was closed to outsiders. It was several years before Desert Storm came about and my unit was called to Active Duty and sent to Fort Sill, Oklahoma to process the Army Reserve personal into the Active Army. I was told by several people I was sending them to thier death, which wasn't true. After the assignment at Fort Sill I received orders to deploy to Saudia Arabia with 3rd Army and was assigned to their Comptroller Office. After serving about six months in Saudia Arabia I was asked to deploy into Kuwait and help set up bases there. I worked in Kuwait funding contracts until September of 1992. I was ask to go to the Pentagon and work as the budget officer for a special NATO project. I served at the Pentagon for two years funding contracts and moving personnel around the World. My next assignment was to Germany with 7th Army. I was in Germany a few months and was asked to go to Bosnia and replace another MAster Sergeant that needed to come home. I actually moved by bus through Hungry to Tuzla Main in Bosnia. Later in the year we moved to Croatia just across the Sava River where I was asked to take over the Mayor Position of a Military base. I had no idea was I was getting into. I was responsible for 1800 soldiers from cots to parking. I was glad when my time was up and I got to go back to Oklahoma. My next assignment took me back to Germany with V CORPS as a buget analyst, where I deployed to Kuwait and become the Comptroller for the Country for all V CORPS units stationed there. I worked in Kuwait for 1 year and then rotated back to Germany and accepted a civilian position with the 1st Infantry Division as the Division Deputy Comptroller. My second month at my new job I was asked to deploy to Iraq so the Comptroller could come back to Germany. It brought back lots of memories of Viet Nam.
