Danny's Story
Life
Since leaving Alameda I've done a number of things and lived all over the US.
After HS I went to Florida to a small religeous private college, then after a few weeks back home in Alameda, spent the summer as a camp counselor at Peacock Camp for Crippled Children in Illinois. didn't like my coach and on the way to the airport was convinced by an old running teammate from my 1st HS to transfer to his Jr. college in Lake County ILL. Lived in my old hometown of Waukegan, IL for the semester. Then ended up transfering back to the 1st college and getting married at the end of the semester to a girl from Nashville.
Stayed married 3 years and worked as a welder, and after the divorce, ended up in Florida working on charter boats for 3 years. Went to Maine on vacation in 83 and ended up living on Peaks Island near Portland ME. In April/84 and old FL charter boat contact called me and I got to work in Mexico the summer of 84 as engineer on a crewboat! Came back to ME and ended up doing construction as a mason and sheetrocker. Built a lot of chimneys on Peaks! Stayed on Peaks for 15 years. IN bewteen, spent a couple of years in MT near Missoula, then back to ME by way of Atlanta, GA. Worked construction a few more years and wit...Expand for more
h a stroke of good fortune, found a job as a paralegal in a Legal Services office under 2 grants, Migrant & Native American outreach paralegal providing free civil legal services.
I still do the same work with a chance to speak spanish to the hispanic workers that come to Maine. Since we have regional oversight on migrant outreach over New England, I get to travel to NY, VT, NH, MA, CT to visit migrant workers.
In the late 80's, I had wanted to start playing clarinet again, and fell in love with Klezmer music and got caught up in the klezmer revival. I helped start a klezmer band in 1987 called the Casco Bay Tummlers. The others were the continuing force and we went thru a couple of changes of members, me coming and going. When I came back from MT, the new group had great players and I had to fight to keep up. The best thing we ever did was 2 trips to Europe in 2000,...a trip to Germany playing in Berlin & Chemnitz, and then a 2 week tour in Lithuania. Both amazing countries. We did a CD after we came back called "Jumpin Jewpiter." I'm proud of that.
Had to give up the band in 2002 for various reasons, but, still love the music.
I'm still taking spanish classes at the University of Maine.....have to keep my edge!!
