Darnell's Story
Life
Throuhout my High School year I played football and ran track. I had a lot of friends there. I really learned a lot from all my teachers. I had a great time at Roosevelt. While I was there we became State Champions and had some State track champions as well. While I was in HS I had (2) jobs (Chester's Hamburgers & Solo Serve). As I look back on the days of Roosevelt I can honestly say I left there with a lot of respect for all the teachers putting up with everyone. I know that it was hard work for them and at the end of the day when I went home I felt good knowing that I learned something new each day whether I wanted to learn or not. I thank all the teachers on a job well done. I'll miss all the good times and bad times I shared with my friends. To this day I keep in touch with all my friends who were tight with me. Good luck Class Of 1998.
Once I graduated I joined the United States Navy at the age of 19. I'm currently stationed in Keflavik, Iceland at the age of 21. I am a Petty Officer Third Class currently working in the Aviation field building bombs and I enjoy it. To everybody out there who thinks you can't achieve your goal keep trying and study hard and you can do anything you want. "It is better to have failed trying, than failing to try at all."
I then did a 7 mo. deployment of defending our country of the recent attack of 9/11. "Operation Enduring Freedom". It was a lot of hard work and hours worked in the Gulf. While on our deployment we visited Hong Kong, Singapore, Bahrain, Australia, and Hawaii. I enjoyed what I wa...Expand for more
s doing. I know I was doing something important to defend our country. Before I left I picked up AO2 in 2003.
In 2005 I volunteered to go to Afghanistan for a year, In 2007 I returned from Afgahinstan (April). It's hard to understand a countrys religion and beliefs until you've been there. Working with the Army's National Reserve and The Navy Reserve was completely out of my element. I worked with Intel and found out a lot more than I needed. It's all good. I got to see both sides of the world. I learned so much about the country. If an opportunity came up again to do this, I wouldn't go unless I had to. My next assignment was in Atsugi, Japan.
I moved to Japan in Dec 2007. Just before I left CA, I was lucky to meet my now beautiful wife (Tracy), she is from Australia. I moved to Japan and she visited me Feb 2008, I knew she was the one straight away! 8 mo. later we got married on Halloween 2008 on the beautiful tropical Island called Guam. While I was in Japan, I got a chance to visit Thailand, Philippines and Sydney, Australia among other places. Also my wife flew to many ports in 2009 to visit me. I had an awesome time with her. We celebrated our 1st Anniversary in Hong Kong in this beautiful resturant. Japan was a culture shcok because of the language barrier between Americans and Japanese. I made lots of friends that i will cherish a lifetime. Japan was fun, but because of my schedule, I was gone for most of the year.
I left Japan in Jan 2011 and now reside in San Diego once again, but this time it's with my beautiful wife.
