Darrell's Story
Military
22May1986 - Enlisted in the United States Navy as an Aviation Electriciansmate.
May/July 1986 - Basic Training, Drill Company 922, in San Diego, CA.
Memories: Watching John Spencer get mashed on the grinder for flipping his rifle in the air, and then being requested during graduation to perform for the audience. One of my most dreaded memories was of being MAA "Alpha" and having visited Short Tour 4 times in the one week due to my fellow recruits that had goofed up.
July/Mar 1986 - Class "A" School, Millington, TN.
Memories: Walking with Steve Shoenfield down to the Brass Rail and barely making it back after watching him try to walk the pipe next to the bridge and not quite making it all the way across. I also remember AE2 Jackson failing the entire class during one of the "beeper" labs saying that "if we didn't learn to troubleshoot, none of us would ever pass."
Mar 1986/May 1990 - Attack Squadron VA-55
Memories: ...Expand for more
After 2 cruises, one of which was the Decommissioning, I was hard pressed to choose a memory that would stand out. I would have to say during the cruise in 1987 spending Christmas in Sorrento, Italy. That is where I found out that I had just become a father for the first time and AWOL at the same time due to the USO not telling us the correct information on the train schedules. The only thing that saved my butt and the two guys that were with me was that our C.O. as well as most of the officers were having their Christmas party there and we ran into them.
May 1990/Dec 1993 - Attack Squadron VA-42
Memories: El Centro, Work-Ups on damn near every carrier in the fleet. Working in the AE shop as 2nd Shift Supervisor, QA as "Gestapo" and doing "audits".
Mostly of all the memories that I have of the Navy, the one thing that I miss the most is of being on a flightdeck. There was nothing like it and nothing has truly matched it since.
