Darrell's Story
My story starts out with me being raised on Cemetery Hill for those who don't know, that is land south of Broadway where the old Skaggs store is now.Cherry Street, born there Nov 1957.
I attended DHS when it was K-12 all black school, before integration sent me to Robert E Lee.I remember alot from those years when all i had to do was walk 5 mins down Boone Dr and i would be on the steps of the school,no crosswalk just walk up the steps and be greeted by hundreds of bright trophy's and ribbons of a school that was of brains and athletic champions. Now from there i move on to Lee, In its main hall was a trophy case, in it was not a thing just some lights. The year was 1967 i'm just in the 4th grade and i thinking they don't have any sports or nobody here to do anything. That was the time things changed for R.E.L Grade School, it became a school that could compete with the other grade school's for the first time in 5th grade we played for the city championship at the National Guard Armory g...Expand for more
ym against Grant School, which Lee super sonic's won,we also repeated the following year 6th. Junior high years was just as great playing sports.Talent was excellent my classmate at Jeff Jr for B-ball was John Sanders ,Gerry Ellis,Wayne Buckner,John Stolt,Carson Carrington were the starters but we had a very good bench, people who could start at the other two schools,West&Oakland. My class went on to sweep 3 straight years winning . We won everything we did except 1 football game to West Jr.Time to ware the purple& gold.As a sophomore i was playing varsity b-ball with guys like Steve Marshall,Leo Lewis,Mike Coleman and i can't leave out my brother Alan Jordan.I didn't get a lot of playing time but i did get to play. Those years was great playing with my brother for the first time in official ball.Today 32 years later i enjoy listening to Kewpie ball on the radio and occasional game or two at the gym or on the field.I love my work in the lab at UMHC as a Med Tech in Hematology.
