Darrell's Story
You Know it is funny how some things don't seem all that great when you are going through them; but, upon looking back you can remember a lot of good times. My whole life has been that way, to a point; My 4 years at Ray-Pec were not stellar academically speaking. Oh I learned and did fairly well, but I know I could have done much better. I do feel for the most part that I was relatively invisible, and life for me really didn't start till I was out of school.
I was so anxious to get out of school but had no real plans, so I got a Job. Then about 2 weeks after graduation I got Into a pretty bad Car wreck and lost 3 days, I have no real knowledge of those three days, save the exploits that were related to me after I got out of the hospital. Now this in itself was not really all that funny, but to hear some of the stories of the things I said and did; well, that is a completely different matter.
I worked a couple factory Jobs till I was about 20 then came the first Layoff, I was kicking back enjoying the summer when I was coaxed into visiting the Marine Recruiter. Now I had no real plans of joining the Marine Corps, but the recruiter (SGT Rucker was his name), informed me that I did pretty well on that basic math test and he wanted to subject me to a battery of tests called the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, I wasn't totally sold on the idea but, having nothing else to do I agreed. Apparently I did so well on some of the tests I had to take them again, if that makes any sense. After this point several of us were herded into a room where they were doing mass physicals, and I wound up standing in line with my had raised swearing to protect this country from all enemies foreign and Domestic, when all I really wanted to know was how I was going to get home.
Now don't get me wrong I am completely proud that I served my country; but, much like high school I didn't enjoy a lot of the things as they were happening. On the other hand I got to see the country, and meet many great people, and yes I did have a lot of fun at times. Serving your country sometimes means you may have to serve over seas. Upon arrival I thought the extent of this trip was to work endless hours and live in extreme boredom, till I got to go to Sicily a couple times and I do have some stories about that place. The most significant event, though, was one of tragedy, when a truck bomb blew up the Marine Barracks, killing 251 Marines and Sailors. I never thought I would be connected to such an historical event.
I went back to work at a job I had been laid off of and met my best buddy, against his advice I married his sister, this wasn't all bad, I do have a daughter, but little else to show for it. Then jumped right from the frying pan into the fire, and eventually married mistake number 2. She was 5 foot 2, a mean drunk with an alligator mouth. Needless to say that ended also, and I was relatively content, or so I told myself, and stayed that way for about 6 years.
In 2003 I met my bride, the love of my life, and my very best friend. Together we have 2 daughters and 3 grandsons, a 3 and a 2 year old, and a one month old. I love playing with them and teaching them, and tormenting them, ah such fun.
Last year just before my 4th layoff I started College ( kind of a log spell I know). I graduate in December with an Associates degree and currently hold a 3.84 grade average. I commence to attain my Bachelors Degree in January.
If you were not bored to death and you can still hold your eyes open I will tell you about the things I like to do. I write poetry and have since high school. I actually had a couple published. I like to garden, camp out, walk in the woods, fish, do home improvement, and work with my hands, I am kind of a self taught handyman. I also like to go to the occasional football game, or baseball game, and If we still had a hockey team they are lots of fun too. I can say that to me family is the most important thing and I like seeing my brothers and sister and my nieces and nephews.
I may not be what most people would consider a financial success, but I am working on it; however, I have lived life and experienced many things; and I do like to relate a story from time to time, sometimes I even crack my self up.
