Darryl's Story
Elementary & High School:
Attended McDonald grade school grades 1 thru 5. After two months of 6th grade at McDonald we moved and I attended Robinson Twp. School from 6th through 8th grade and then it was back to McDonald High School for grades 9 thru 12.
My brother had a Studebaker convertible which he sold to me in the summer of 52. Thinking back I was pretty lucky to be a senior in high school driving a convertible to school. After my military service in the Marine Corps it was back to school evenings at Penn Technical Institute (PTI) while working full time at Ambridge until I graduated in 1960.
Jobs:
Paper route for Pittsburgh Post Gazette, pin-setter at Moreau's Bridgeville bowling alley, poster change person for Dreamland theater, Jerk (Soda) at Bard's Dairy Store on Lincoln Avenue, McDonald during summer of 52 and winter and summer of 53. American Bridge Steel Fabricating (Ambridge, Pa) the fall after graduation. That was interrupted by a stint in the Marine Corps and then back to Ambridge. My first job after graduating PTI was at Farrington Electronics in Alexandria, Virginia. That was where I learned computer programming. After Farrington went bankrupt in 1971 the engineering division was purchased by Lundy Electronics in Charlotte, NC. After a year in Charlotte I transferred to the field office back in Annendale, Virginia. After a couple of years it was off to the (so called) Beltway Bandits. That is the term given to the companies that work under government contract most of who were positioned just off the beltway around Washington, DC in Maryland and Virginia. I found myself following the government contracts working for whichever company won the next contract. Some were: CSC where I honed my computer programming skills and then, TRW, CACI, Grumman, Logicon and many more. Some companies I worked for twice. After 1974 the maximum time at any job, until I retired in 2005, was five years. The ...Expand for more
minimum was one year.
Military:
In June of 54, after a year at American Bridge Company in Ambridge, Pa., I joined the Marine Corps and was off to PI. My timing was fortunate because the Korean Armistice had just ended. I spent some time overseas (it was then) on maneuvers in Viegues, a small island near Porto Rico, from January through March of 1955 and again in 1956. In other words I left the cold weather of Camp Geiger, Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC in January for the sunny beaches of Viegues and returned when winter was over. (Not to shabby).
Family:
I married the love of my life, Jean Reinstadtler (that's a mouthful), in July of 1958. We had three daughters, Theresa, born June 1959, Karen, born June 1965 and Barbara, born January 1969. Five grandchildren, Danielle (Theresa's), Zachary & Caroline (Karen's) and Shea & Francesca (Barbara's). I am sorry to have to say that we lost, the love of my life and loving mother and grandmother, Jean, in May of 2003 taken by a tragic automobile accident.
Sports:
I bowled with a number of teams until 2005 when I began to have shoulder problems. My first love of sports is golf. I was introduced to golf while living in the apartment in Alexandria in 1960. I still play golf. I am not too good at it but I still play. I may have to lay off soon for shoulder surgery but I will be back. I have never had a hole-in-one.
Accomplishments:
Joined the Knights of Columbus in 1967. I have served in a number of council offices including Grand Knight of George Brent Council (3rd Degree) and Assembly offices including Navigator of Bishop Flaherty Assembly (4th Degree), both in Manassas, Va., And, until recently, I served as Equipment Manager of the Virginia 4th Degree Exemplification Team for 30+ years. I hold a real estate license for the state of Virginia. I am currently a board member serving as secretary of the homeowners association for the condominium where I live.
