Darryl's Story

Life Hello everyone, well it's been 36 years now since HS Grad and WOW. This is great stuff ! After grad., I spent 11 years in the AirForce, traveling the world, engineering secure communication systems. I completed my degrees in IT and CS from the Univ. of Maryland & The Community College of the AF. I was fortunate to work for Gen. Schwartzkopf, excuse the spelling, during Desert Shield/Storm, at US Central Command. I married in '87, and have 1 beautiful daughter from that marriage, Lauren, who is a blessing, but my wife and I divorced in '93. I joined Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games in Jan '93, where I managed the IBM hardware assets loaned through the IBM-ACOG Sponsorship. As we got closer to games time, I was key in the development of the games time hardware and OS platforms, for all venues and events. i.e., Operations, Timing and Scoring, Results, Commentator and Broadcasting systems During the '96 games, my second daughter Haley, was born. Her mother and I aren't together, but we both love Haley so much and work hard at being the best parents God has shown us to be. This changed my life. I'm now a disciple of our Lord, Jesus Christ, where I'm deeply involved in many ministries at where I'm a member of Christ Church at Whitewater in Fayetteville. Our fellow M.D. Collins HS classmate, Polly Painter(Butler), is also a member. I'm active in my community as well, mostly within Fayette County, Ga. I'm a member of 2 separate community service clubs and I also serve as Event Director of the Fayette County Civitan Club Old Courthouse 5K Road Race held every year in June.. I also travel yearly to Ethiopia and El Salvador with Children's Cross Connection International, on Mobile Medical Missions. My duties serve as the in country team leader where I ensure all operations and resources are available and team members are where they need to be, doing their duty to make the missions successful. Each trip is a new adventure and teach...Expand for more
es a person compassion and love for others, beyond your own understanding. I'm still working in the IT field as an IT Architect and Advisory IT Specialist with Big Blue(IBM). Work has become an exciting time for me now and looking back, I wouldn't change a thing. Military I spent the Fall of '81 in Air Force Basic Training. From there I spent 10 months in beautiful Wichita Fallas, Tx for technical education and career training in Telecom Maintenance. Does anyone recognize the UGC-28? I was then assigned to the 2012th Communication Sq at Seymour Johnson(Goldsboro, NC) from '82-'84. I followed that with a lovely vacation assignment for 1 year to the remote Shemya AFB, Alaska(9-55 degrees), at the most northern point of the Pacific, where I fulfilled my duty as a Job/Tech Controller. Sounds like nothing, but we were the first notifiers of incoming ICBMs from Russia, so the comm links were crucial to our National Defense Systems success. With a choice of assignment, I then went to RAF Bentwaters England,(2064th Comm Sq) where I lived in the town of Ipswich, approx 20 miles away, from '85-'87. After wrecking my first car, 1 week after arriving in country, I decided to cycle to and from to work daily... and that was perfect for getting in shape and staying that way. It was here where I met my daughter Lauren's mother. She was a dependent of a American GI stationed there as well. After Bentwaters, we were stationed at MacDill AFB, Tampa, as part of the 1839 Engineering & Installation Group, Operating Location D, in direct support of US CENTCOM and US SOCOM, 2 Unified Commands, where I engineered and installed secure communications for them both. It was here where I recognized my purpose and duty to our nation. From '87-'92, I got to be a vital part many global real world missions that directly affected the freedoms of people worldwide. I would not change a thing. I separated in late '92, after being convinced to do so by my Ex-wife... UGH !
