Alan's Story
Life
After Sunnyslope I went straight into the Army. I spent 3 years in Germany where I had some great life experiences and created lots of memories. But when my tour ended I realized that the military life wasn't for me, so I returned to Phoenix.
There was one thing that happened to me in basic training that's stuck with me ever since. When I got off the bus in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, the drill seargent hollered "David Davis" (my first name) when calling role. Rather than correct the drill sergeants (and take the punishment that went along with it), I started going by my first name (Dave). When I first separated from the military, it seemed I had 2 distinct lives; the life before the Army and the life after. Now, everyone calls me Dave... But I still answer to Al or Alan.
Next, I went to AZ Tech to learn the trade of computer programming. Eventually, I started working at Miller Computing and became one of the small group (or so it seemed) of technical folks in Phoenix working on Prime computers. Over the next 3 - 4 years ('83 - '87) I worked at 3 different companies in Phx doing programming, systems administration and some training and education. Then I went off and did some consulting in Manhattan (...Expand for more
NY) and settled in Naperville, Illinois at a company called Effective Management Systems.
I spent about 9 years with EMS. I learned a lot and had a great time! But, it was time to get back to AZ! So, in late 1997 I took a job with Maricopa County working in the computer/technical area, and have been there ever since.
On the personal side, I was married in 1985. I had a daughter in 1986, Morgan Whitney. Then a son in 1990, Cody Alan. I was divorced in 1994. In retrospect, my first marriage was for all of the wrong reasons and I was much too young (24).
I married again in late 1995, to Karen, my current wife. I did a much better job of choosing a spouse the 2nd time around! We love to work on our house, in the yard, and spend time with friends and family. She is truly the love of my life.
I went to MANY, MANY colleges through the years, and finally received my Bachelor's degree from Univ of Phx in 2001! And, as if that wasn't enough punishment, I went to school for 3 more years and received an MBA from Keller Graduate School in early 2005.
Right now, life is good; I'm enjoying work and the life I lead. Karen and I enjoy traveling, seeing our beautiful state, and other parts of the country and the world.
