Dave's Story
Hi,
After 39 years and 8 months, IBM gave me a choice of moving to India or China at the prevailing wage, or to take 6 month severence pay and retire. That was in February of 2009.
I'm looking for work, but with this economy, not much hope. A local church has a support group, Job Seekers, and close to 300 show up every Monday morning to network and about a third are new for the first time each Monday.
I became a Scout Leader in 1986. I currently am the Adviser for a BSA Venturing Crew of 27 youth. About 8 are in college so we rarely see them. The rest come to most meetings and some of the monthly activities. We do all sorts of things: backpacking, skiing, caving, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, hiking. May 23 we went flying with the EAA Young Eagles. The weekend of May 30th we went to Bear Island for some surf fishing, crabbing and beach combing. Camping in the sand is always a challenge.
Then June 21-27 we went Sea Kayaking on the Outer Banks (camp on ...Expand for more
the beach every night).
We signed up to go scuba diving from a 65 foot sailing boat in the Bahamas in June of 2010 for a week. Got scuba certified in April 2009.
My daughter Robin and her family live in Greenville, SC so only 5 hours from Cary, NC. She has two sons: Bakary is 9 and Zeke is 5. Her husband Trevor started a new career last year as a 2nd grade teacher. Robin is a social worker for the state and a helper at Zeke's nursury school.
Helen works at the Christian Community in Action as their book keeper. CCA distributes food and money to people in crisis. They operate a thrift shop which is their major source of income.
We have not been back in Montana since our Mothers died in 2004. I was very disappointed when I went into a bar and every one was like zombies playing various types of gambling machines. No one talked. Kind of eerie.
2/25/10 - Just spent a day packing supplies to send to Hiati. Boxes up to 75 lbs each stacked on pallets 7' high. I'm pooped!
