Dave's Story
Life
Proud husband to Robin for 20 yrs., dad to Tristan (11) and owner of the cutest Beagle you ever did see, Clancy. I am active in our church and spend a lot of time teaching finance classes. I am the Northwest regional coordinator for Willow Creek associations Good Sense program. We have lived in Portland for about 9 years, and are not in fear of rusting, even though there is a fair amount of rain. In our spare time (yeah right), we cruise with Royal Caribbean and tour the country in our 39' class A motorhome. Since we started cruising in 2001, we have been to Canada, Spain, France, Rome, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Alaska, Mexico (3x), Costa Rica, Panama and Aruba. Our next trip is in Feb. 2008 aboard the Freedom of the Seas...the biggest cruise ship (to date). We get to Ridgecrest occassionally and try to visit with as many folks as possible. I was disappointed that the school did not have a 30th reunion in 2005 as that would have been my 25th, but hopefully they will have their act together in 2010. I have attended every reunion since 1985 when we were doing them every year for awhile in the old gym. It is nice to see the school growing...even nicer to see grass growing everywhere!
School
Nothing real noteworthy here...found and keep in contact with Jim Hill. He was principal the first few years the school was open. He and Claudia are great people and we enjoy getting together every year or so. I enjoyed playing basketball and am very proud of our school. It went through a lot of rough spots those first few years, but continues to churn out incredible folks! Ran into Mickey McDowell in Victorville at High Desert Church and we visit with he and Pam as well every time we visit Robin's family. Mickey was youth pastor and interim pastor at IBC for a few years and we used to toilet paper his house every Friday night. The best time was when we were dutifully covering the car in the driveway and looked up to see young Christopher watching us from the front screen door. He was in his footy pajamas, and was not saying a word...just watching us. He even waved goodbye when we took off! I think he was 2 or 3 at the time. We used to TP everyone's house...nobody was sacred. I finally got mine when one Saturday I woke up and mom told me I had a mess to clean up in the front yard. The entire cheerleading squad had stayed at Heather and Erin Martin's ...Expand for more
home the night before and sometime had covered our front yard. They then all took positions on their back fence and watched me clean it up! I ran with Walter Curtis, Mike Frederickson, Curt Taylor, Pat Shea and Doug Trent. Doug died at 23 (I think) in Georgia which was a real blow to us. Pat kind of comes in and out of all of our lives but doesn't like to stay in contact too much. The rest of us get together periodically, usually at reunions. We all live in different parts of the country so visits are few and far between, but wonderful when they do happen.
College
Cerro Coso and Victor Valley College account for my entire college career. I am a few units shy of an AA, but could teach business with all I've learned in the real world. Ironically one of the two classes I still need for my AA is speech and I am constantly speaking to groups in Oregon and Washington with no problem...sure was terrifying in college though.
Workplace
Worked at Ridgecrest Automotive for Don Padgett for a few years when I was 15 -17. Then went to work for Clancey's Claim Co from 1980-84. Started as a dishwasher then ended up as one of 4 managers before the place went through a real tough time and closed. By then I was over at John's Pizza for 2 years waiting tables and delivering pizzas. That was probably the most fun I ever had in a job. (Thanks JP) It was there that the owner of 10 Sizzler restaurants stole me away to open the Ridgecrest Sizzler. That relationship lasted only about 6 months and then it was off to the Cask 'n Cleaver restaurant chain from 1986-1999. I started as an assistant mgr in Victorville and spent tours of duty as a GM in San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga, and Redlands. For a few years in the middle I worked as a nursing home administrator. The first place was a 32 bed Alzheimer's facility in East Redlands, and the second was a 250 bed care home in San Bernardino. In 1999 we moved to Portland where we opened our own business, A Cut Above Pawnshop. Yeah, that's right, a pawn shop...we've had a blast but it is still a job. I also own a franchise company that sells eyeglass repair businesses and I own three of the company stores. That company is called FrameDoctors and has stores in Fresno, Rancho Cucamonga, Riverside, Victorville, Clovis and Orange. Wouldn't want to get bored...
