Dave's Story
my c.v. in a nutshell:
BA Biology UConn 74
MS Entomology UMass 79 (Cousteau romanticism and love of the sea gives way to reality, there's money in bugs)
PhD Entomology UMass 85 (but, hey, I actually like bugs. Okay, I've always been a bit off)
Research Entomologist USDA, Brookings, SD 85-91 (BTW, hell does freeze over). Worked on developing methods for reducing pesticide use in corn production systems among other things.
Entomologist/Station Director, Waimanalo, HI 91-99 (oversaw satellite labs in Gainesville, FL and Guatemala City). Research on exotic fruit fly detection (e.g., medfly) and sterile insect release methods.
Entomologist/Asst. Lab Director/Lab Director, Buzzards Bay, MA 99-present. Research on a number of exotic invasive insect pests - mostly forest insects, including emerald ash borer and Asian lo...Expand for more
nghorned beetle (both should be familiar to any Mariemont folks who didn't stray too far from home). Way too much time of late being a manager instead of a scientist.
Married '82, son born '91 (okay, so I don't get around to things too fast). Still married (same person nonetheless)!
People tell me I'm still somewhat irreverent with an offbeat sense of humor; I would give examples, but I'd likely get kicked off Classmates. I do generally try to act like a responsible and upstanding member of the race - working for the feds requires that to some degree, as does being a boss (tho acting is not necessarily being). Getting ready shed all of that, walk out the door, and head back to HI. Grow coffee and commune with the honu in Kona, yeah? Maybe a bit of painting. What, retirement? How did we get so bloody old so fast???
