Dave's Story
School
My biggest crush would be a toss up, Dawn Lombard from Lehigh or Melissa Volker-Ft Dodge. I always wonder what ever happen to them. I did see Melissa a few years ago after I came back from Kosovo during the 4th of July. That was nice to see she was doing alright and catch up on old times.
Mr Kinley and Bruce Wilde inspired me the most. FFA and 4-H gave me the foundation to become the leader I am today. I will tell you leading troops into combat is no joke. Those were both great organizations that gave me so much and to this day I encourage young children and teens to get involved in organizations like that plus I volunteer my time when I can. Unforantly being deployed all the time makes it hard.
If I could do it all over again? I wish my parents wouldn't have moved in the middle of my senior year, that wasn't much fun. The only thing I would change would have taken school more seriously. I now have two associates and 5 more classes I will have my bachelors, YEA!!! I stuggled at first with college but the military gave me the discipline and drive to succed. I now have a 4.0 compared to my 2.8 in high school. I unforantly feel into the trap why do I need this when I already know what I am going to do after high school. But luckily some good friends got me on track. School memories dont drink and ski, senior ski trip that was painful. Craziest moments would have to be some of the road trips Guy and I took. I was very suprised to win county fair king, didn't even think I had a chance. 4-H and FFA experiences were really great. Funniest would be when I was playing baseball, I ran into the left field fence while catching a fly ball, thanks center fielder for the warning, hehe. I caught it but paid the price.
Workplace
After I got back from my Army Training I worked at Service Parts (Road Pro) in Ft Dodge. Was a alright job, I drove all over Iowa, Missouri, Kansas an Nebraska delivering auto parts. I then got a job as a seamtress out at Precision sewing. I sewed and repaired semi tarps(not a fun job). Then I started college an worked part time at Standard All Around Truck Stop it was ok but not enough hours to survive while going to school. Then I went to Georgia Pacific as a security guard making much better money but swing shift with college sucked. Then I went back to the truck stop full time. All the time I was in the guard and had made E-5 Sergeant while in college. Just as I was graduating I got a call from Frigidaire in Webster City. The pay there was better than any shop had offerd me as a mechanic so I went there. I worked there 2 years was a union stewart, intersting job. While laid off I recruited for awhile for the guard, that job blew, the hours and the BS weren't worth it. I then decided I needed a change to many bad things had happen to me in Ft Dodge, I just got married and my wife and I both decided to go active duty. At MEPS we found out she was pregant so I joined and we went to FT Lewis. Started out as a Private First Class. Left there 3 years later as an E-5 Sergeant. Spent my entire time on a Maintenance Support Team(MST)went to Charleston,South Carolina for 5 months(awesome time), Oakland, California(scary place, had a blast at Sant...Expand for more
a Cruz and Pebble Beach)Then went to Japan for a month(very nice would love to go back again). Then I went to Germany, was there 6 months I did so much there it was incredible, may retire there. Traveled most of the european countries had a blast in Scotland, expensive but beautiful. While there was on various MST's made E-6 with 4 years in. Was at Bamberg, Germany for 2 1/2 years then Vilseck, Germany 2 1/2 then back to Bamberg for one more year. When I went back I made E-7 Sergenat First Class. I have been deployed to Bosnia, Macadonia, Albania, Poland, Kosovo while I was sstaioned in Germany. I have been a team chief, inspector and Platoon Sergeant, was a detachment commander for 16 months. Left Germany went to school for E-7 then to Ft Sill, 8 months later went to Iraq Mar 03 to Feb 04. I was a Platoon Sergeant and also ran a Department of Public works. I was responsible for Iraqi workers who worked on our life support area (LSA). Very intersting job really got to see ther Iraqi people in a different way. Meet some really great people, in many ways they are alot like us, want good homes, a car, good education and safety for thier children, food etc.. I left Ft Sill in June 04 and came to Boise, Idaho. I originally came here as a maintenance advisor to the National Guard units here. The unit was depolying to Iraq so I went to El Paso, Tx to train them up. Came home in Oct for foot surgery then Nov I made E-8 so I will be taking over as 1SG here. My carear has been just amazing I never dreamed to have done as much I have. Nor did I ever imagine making my rank as quick as I have. But I have had some great mentors and lived by not settling for second best. I have over 7 years left then I am eligible for my 20 year retirement. Want to make the final rank of E-9 Command Sergenat Major. After retiring from the Army looking foward to settling down, trying my hand at something different not sure exactly what. Has been a heck of a ride never dreamed of doing the things I have but sure glad I had the oppurtinity.
Military
Well most of my working years has been with the military. I will say that I have seen and done so much. I owe the Army so much, it has been very good to me. There have been so dwon times but all and all I am very thankful my travels took me this way. I can't imagine where I would be if I would have stayed in Ft Dodge.
Boot camp was tough, and the hours of work well it can be long and hard. But the awards and experiences I have been apart of have been awesome. I have meet some great people and seen so awesome sights.
I will tell you the Army has made me a better man/father and husband. It has open so many doors for me and still is challenging me daily. I love being a soldier, and it is an experience I hope to past on to others for many years to come. the biggest challenge so far was Iraq. Being a Platoon Sergeant you have so many responsibiltys. Your soliders are counting on you.
The Army has many ups and downs but for me it has guided me and made me a better person. When I leave the Army I will be sad but Happy. I will miss it dearly but looking foward to spending more time at home with my family. Trying something new and hopefully challenging.
