Dave's Story

I can sincerely say that, if I could, I'd do high school all over again. It's true I had a little too much fun and, yes, I'd do some things a little bit differently. But, in the end, no regrets. After high school, I became a broadcaster - perhaps best known for my many years on CKOC, Hamilton and, more recently CHYM FM, Kitchener and most recently 99.5 KFUN (CHUM/CTV now Bell Media). There were also had stops in Burlington and Barrie. I also have been involved with hockey all my life as a player, I scouted for many years and managed a pro hockey team a couple of seasons. Right now, still doing the radio & tv thing freelance, tv and radio commercials (even a few of those annoying middle-of-the-night tv infomercials), been in a couple of films, writing and working as an image consultant. I have been married twice and have a Brady Bunch type family of six kids - all grown up and doing a variety of things. In what seems like precious little spare time there is, I'm up to speed on Facebook and hoping to connect with old friends along the way. And it actually happened in 2011 when, after forty years, Bill Stolba, Debbie Porter, Paul Larabie and I hooked up as the Mushy Peez playing mainly "British Invasion" stuff that was big when we were in high school. After Bill left the Mood and I departed the Federation, we formed Old Dixie with Ian Madge and the late Lyle Burke until the end of 1970. In 2011, we played at The Brig (Norfolk Hotel) in Port Dover as part of a school reunion/birthday party. However, I left the Peez after three fantastic years and have re-united with Ian Madge to reform the Federation. The 'Feds' (the nickname we had back in the sixities is the name we go by now) played with the also reunited Mood (who called themselves the Men In The Mood) on August 23rd (2014) in the SCS gym. The show was presented by the Lions Club with all proceeds going to the charities they work with in the co...Expand for more
mmunity. This was the first time the two bands ever played on the same stage together - not even "back in the day." There was a finale with all band members from both groups playing together. What a fantastic night - complete sell-out - with many people there we haven't seen in decades. My life-long friend and broadcasting colleague back in the CFRS days, The late Doug Cameron, was the MC. What a fabulous night it was! Thank you all who were there for your support. The FEDS will be back at it upstairs at the Gator Norfolk Tavern in Port Dover 4 -8 pm on Saturday December 17th from 4 - 8 pm. In the New Year, the FEDS will be back at the Gator At The Norfolk in Port Dover on Saturday January 14th, 2023 from 4 - 8 pm. By the way, this year The FEDS are celebrating the 55th Anniversary of the formation of the original Federation / The FEDS on January 7, 1967. I know it sounds cliche, but it really does just seem like yesterday. The radio station where I spent the majority of my broadcasting career, 1150 CKOC, is now TSN 1150. I was privileged to be one of the 'jocks' invited back to sign off one of the greatest radio stations on Thursday, September 3rd, 2015 from 2-4 pm playing some of the greatest hits of all time and, of course, sharing some memories from the many years I spent as an announcer there. Had a great time, but much too short :( And since then, a lot of people have told me they are upset with the switch. I hear you, but that (unfortunately) is the corporate world we live in today. Decisions are made by someone armed with a spreadsheet, who frankly doesn't care and has little or no comprehension of what the station meant to generations of listeners since signing on as Ontario's first radio station and Canada's second in 1922. Having said that, I am proud I was just a little part of CKOC's storied history. That's the Coles Notes version of the past fifty years...and counting.......
