Dave's Story
Graduated from Circleville (OH) High School in 1964. Graduated from Otterbein College in 1969 with a major in sociology and minor in speech communication. Married Nancy Bradford (from Minford, OH) in July 1969. Attended United Theological Seminary, Dayton, 1969-70. During college and seminary, worked at WOBN-FM, Otterbein; WNRE-FM, Circleville; WCOL-FM, Columbus; and WBLY-AM & FM, Springfield. While in seminary, was on-air host of "All of One Household," a public affairs TV show on WLWD-TV, Dayton. Withdrew from seminary to work in broadcasting at: WDRK-FM, Greenville; WMER-FM, Celina; WJAI-FM, Eaton; and WING-AM, Dayton. Attended The Ohio State University, 1973-74, while teaching broadcasting at Greenville High School, 1973-75, and initiated an educational station, WGVO-FM. Moved to Colorado in 1975 as news director of KSIR-AM, Estes Park. Owned two retail stores (The Oxen Yoke and Covered Wagon Crafts) in resort town of Estes Park, 1976-81. News editor of Estes Park Trail-Gazette, 1980-81. Did some news consulting work at KGUC-FM, Gunnison, in 1981 and did news reporting for UPI, CBS, ABC and numerous other radio stations including KOA and KHOW, both in Denver. Owned marketing/PR consulting firm, De Nada Productions, 1978-84. Returned to KSIR as station manager, 1982-84. Nancy and I divorced in January 1984. I married Susan Alreck (from Knife River, MN) in June 1984 and we adopted our daughter Jennifer just five months later. Was director of communications for YMCA of the Rockies (nonprofit organization that owns two large conference centers and family resorts in Estes Park and Winter Park) from Oct. 1984 to Jan. 2001. Served as president of the International Association of Conference Center Administrators and as an officer in many other professional organizations. Also, from 1999 to 2004, I was part-owner of Bird's Eye View, an aerial perspective map business. In January, 2001, Susan and I resigned our jobs (she was an ER nurse at Boulder Community Hospital) ...Expand for more
and we became full-time salaried mission workers with Presbyterian Church (USA). Our family spent six months in an intensive immersion language school in Cuernavaca, Mexico. I'm now bilingual and speak Spanish every day. We served for six years as U.S. coordinators of Companeros en Mision, a program of Presbyterian Border Ministry. During that time, we lived about 2 miles north of the U.S./Mexico border and worked with five small churches in the state of Sonora, Mexico. Our work there mostly involved coordinating short-term mission trips for delegations from the U.S., and we accompanied the groups on their trips. Jennifer graduated with honors after completing a one-year course at Apollo College, Tucson, to be a veterinary assistant and has since worked at several animal clinics. She now lives in Longmont, Colorado. As of January, 2007, our current assignment with PC(USA) required us to move to the interior of Mexico in order to be close to the headquarters of our partner denomination, the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico. So we're back living in Cuernavaca again, although we still own our home in Estes Park, Colorado, where I lived for 26 years before this latest career change. Our work is focused on developing healthy partnerships between churches and presbyteries (regional bodies) in the U.S. and Mexico. We travel throughout Mexico, making presentations on the concept of partnership. And we still coordinate short-term mission trips for delegations from U.S. churches to Mexico and vice versa. We've also done extensive travel throughout the U.S. and to several countries in Central America. Although we missed my 45th high school class reunion in July, 2009, we did attend the 40th in Circleville in 2004. With this listing, I'm hoping to hear from friends from my high school class, from other classes, or from Otterbein. I enjoy staying in contact by e-mail and look forward to hearing from old high school and college friends. Check out my profile on Facebook.
