Dave's Story

Life After graduating from Drake University with a journalism degree, I went to work for an ad agency. I stayed 21 years, and then moved on to a brand communications firm in Madison, WI. I left that job recently to go to grad school full time, which is what I am doing now. My partner, Tom, and I live on a small farm east of Madison. We have a menagerie of dogs, cats, horses and a miniature donkey. When I'm not working or goofing off, I do some improvisational comedy now and then. Trained at Chicago's Second City and still do a little now and then here in Madison. For reasons I can't explain, I allowed myself to become president of our local library board of trustees, so I spend a lot of time trying to get a new building built. Meanwhile, I'm also active with the local humane society, training unwanted dogs and trying to get the adopted. School We moved to SoCal when MCHS opened. I was a big, fat nerd. Lost a bunch of weight but stayed a nerd. But a nerd that became ASB president and editor of The Sun, school newspaper. My parents moved back to Illinois before my senior year. Ended up staying in our house in RB, first with two teachers, then with my brother. Was wild. The principal, Mr...Expand for more
. Stine would freak and call my dad to say he thought we were having big parties up at the house. And we were. Lots of weed and beer. College I can't believe I survived. Lots of partying and illegal substances, dubious studying skills, and all kinds of stuff. But wouldn't change a thing. Drake was a great school, and I'm glad I joined Sig Ep. One of my favorite memories of extra-curricular activities was bartending with all the other Sig Eps at "Mother's". We may have been the reason they made no money. I am now attending UW-Madison, working toward my PhD in mass communication. Workplace I spent 20 years with the same ad agency, and it changed over the years. What was NH&S morphed into DDB, and then spun its media function into OMD last year. Once it hit the OMD phase -- essentially a media buying service -- I balied. It was fun but time to go. I switched gears and went from a 1000+ employee company to a 40-person brand communications and consulting firm in Madison, Wisconsin. Best move I could have made at the time. But as that firm struggles, I decided to get what I could for my equity in the company and go back to school. Good thing I have a very supportive partner with a solid job!
