David's Story

Life I met my wife, Kathleen, in Philly, so it is a very special place for us. I was in the MBA program at Wharton, and my best friend from college introduced us. We have been married for 24 years and have six children. They all keep me young. Kathleen grew up in the Philippines and has a wonderful, brilliant, charismatic, and thoroughly unYankee family history. (Her Daddy was from prominent colonial Georgia family and her Mama from a prominent Filipino family steeped in daring exploits, high politics and education.) We've had an "alternative" life with the kids. I've preferred working for myself, and have a consulting business in food and nutrition. Kathleen and I have homeschooled the kids. It has been a very rewarding enterprise, something like organic gardening, I suspect. Three launched to college, three to go! We spent 9 fantastic years in California (San Francisco and San Diego), and our oldest child thinks of herself as a transplanted Californian. Kathleen and I went to my CHS reunion in the summer of 200...Expand for more
6 (31st!) It was very enjoyable. Mostly because I reconnected with the grown-up versions of people I had been in close proximity to since the 3rd grade. Even if we were not close socially in high school, we retained a very real kind of intimate knowledge of (and interest in) each other. Also, Kathleen got to see in the flesh the characters in so many of the stories of my youth. The vibe was completely affectionate and welcoming. You may have heard through the grapevine that we lost my brother, Donald, in 1993. He was killed by a drunk driver near his home in Texas. He was engaged to be married at the time. He had no children. Also, my sister, Cindy, died of cancer in 1992. She was still in college. Remarkably, in time, lives repair, never the same, but functional and with genuine joy in those things that deserve them. Our love for them is permanent and grief over their loss can wash over us acutely in the very present tense, but life is good and the closeness of grandparents, parents and children heals deep wounds.
