David's Story

David lives in Wolcottville, Indiana. I am single and have two daughters. My oldest lives in Houston, Texas and I have three grand children. My youngest is a Adams graduate, is a doctor who works at the South Bend Clinic. She is an OG/GYN and some of you ladies use her as your doctor. She has one grandson for me, he is a great little guy! In 1965 I was drafted by the Army, before my date of entry I was able to join the US Air Force. I served from 1965 to 1972 on active duty as an Intelligence officer, directing air flights where the NSA, National Security Agency. I served in Istanbul, Turkey and Germany, was away five years, returned home in 1970 stationed in Denver, Colorado. In 1972 I left the Air Force at 26, and pursued at college degree at South Bend College of Commerce. I immediately joined the Air Force Reserves at Grissom AFB and served 6 years finishing my service time in 1980. I finished my associate degree in 1974, transferred my credits to Bethel University where I obtained a BS degree in Accounting magna cum laude in 1977. I immediately went to IU South Bend, graduated with honors in 1980 with a Master of Science in Accounting and Business Administration. While attending college from 1972 to 1980 I held full time jobs working at Hart Indiana, Mishawaka, as their Human Resource Manager until 1976. In 1976 I went to Marion Products in Mishawaka, only worked 11 months as their Controller, the business was sold to Wickes Lumber. In 1977 until 1980 I wa the General Manager of South Bend Drug Company. In 1980 I joined New Energy Company of Indiana, the ethanol plant in South Bend as the Treasure, CFO and Vice President of Operations. output, left the company in 1983 to join Tennol Energy Company, an ethanol production facility, as President and Chief Operating Officer. The plant was west of Chattanooga where my second daughter was born in 1987. In 1988 I left Tennol and purchased the Owensboro Distillery in Owensboro, Kentucky. As President and owner, I upgraded the facility from Vodka to fuel alcohol production. The plant was on line and producing when the Kentucky legislature decided to end the $.50 gallon subsidy putting me out of the market and forced bankruptcy. I closed the facility, settled the outstanding accounts and then was sued by the State of Kentucky to collect an ECN note. After some negotiation the law suit was withdrawn, moved back to South Bend in 1989. I worked for St. Joseph Bank in the workout department closing business, selling assets and collecting from bankrupt companies. In 1989 St. Joseph Bank was sold to Key Bank and during that transition I purchased a business in Kendallville, IN. It was in bankruptcy and I turned it around and owned it 28 years. In July, 2014 I sold Charmaran Corporation and retired. I have taught at Bethel University since 1980 as an adjunct. Between 1980 and 2002 I taught undergraduates in accounting, economics, human resources, organization management, organizational behavior, and other undergraduate classes. In 2003 started teaching graduate students Accounting Managerial Decision Making, Entrepreneurship, NFP Management, Organizational Behavior, Global Business, Organizational Management and any other class needing an adjunct. It has been a privilege to work at my Alma Mater 44 years, on campus and on line. I have been married and at the present I am single. God has played an enormous role in my life, guiding through successful and disappointing times in my life. I have been blessed!!
