David's Story
Life
After finishing school, I became a career Army officer. I retired from the Canadian Forces in November 1996, having served in Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto, Borden, England, Germany (very briefly) and Cambodia. I emigrated to New Zealand in December 1996, where I served in the New Zealand Army, retiring as a Major in February 2014. I retired from employment with the New Zealand Defence Force in April 2021. I am now a 'gentleman farmer' on our smallholding in rural Carterton, in the Wairarapa..
School
Rousseau Public School Kindergarden to Grade 6, then (foolishly) Fessenden for Grade 7 "Enrichment". Back to Rousseau for Grade 8, only to be caught up in the big move to the new Senior Public School. We would all really have preferred to be the last graduating class from Rousseau, but as usual the bureaucracy didn't give us any choice. At Ancaster High, I played football for a year and was a Prefect. Eventually ended up part of the 'Year 6 Club'.
College
University of Guelph where I majored in Biological Science officially and parties and late-night Risk games unofficially. After two years my grades indicated to the university that I might not be destined for academia and should go away and think for a year. I eventually went back to school at Brock University, where I obtained a Bachelors degreee in Politics and Public Administratio...Expand for more
n. Later I attended the Royal Military College of Science at Shrivenham in the UK for some post-graduate work in explosives engineering.
Military
I joined the Army Reserve (Militia) in 1974 as a Private with the Royal Hamilton Light Infanty. I served with the RHLI until 1978, when I went off to Brock University in St Catharines and the Lincoln and Welland Regiment - eventually rising to the rank of Captain and becoming the Adjutant. When I completed my degree in 1981 I transferred to the Regular Force. My postings included two tours as a Staff Officer at National Defence HQ (1981 - 83 and 95 - 96. I served at CFB Toronto (1983 - 86) and 1 Service Battalion - Calgary (1986 - 88) and took part in the last large Reforger Exercise to Germany. I attended Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) training at the Army School of Ammunition in the UK for 14 months (Dec 1988 - Mar 90), where my involvement with ammunition and bomb disposal began. A tour at CF Ammunition Depot Angus followed (1990 - 92), and then a posting as Command ATO in Training Systems (1992 - 94). I was a Technical Expert on Mission for the UN in Cambodia - teaching land mine clearance at CMAC for 12 months (94-95). In 1996 I retired from the CF and took up a commision with the New Zealand Army. For many years I was the staff officer responsible for bomb disposal in New Zealand.
