David's Story
Life
EDUCATION:
After graduating from Hartshorne High School, I attended East Central University, Ada, OK. I now have a Bachelor's Degree in Family and Consumer Economics. Since graduation from college, I have had 3 jobs that ACTUALLY utilized that degree, totaling about 11 years. Yeah, money/time well spent!?
HOME:
I have been in a committed relationship since May 1997. We own a home and business together. Our home was built in 1920, but had been a rent house since 1958. It was pretty bad. My sister told my mother, "The only difference between David and a homeless person is that David has a house payment." She wasn't exagerating too much! We tried to work on one room at a time, but after 7yrs on one room, we decided to jump in head first. We moved in with a friend/neighbor for a little over a year while we completly gutted and remodeled our house. The only things original are the frame work and foundation, most of the floors, and the bathtub. It was a very trying time; I will NEVER do it again! I honestly believe I aged more in those 12+ months than I had all previous years since graduation! We finally got to a resting point (as I have learned, you never actually finish) and were featured in a Holiday insert in the Tulsa World, Christmas, 2001. [FYI: It always helps to know people] With the faith, help, and generosity of our friends, we would have never gotten this house put back together.
FRIENDS:
We are very lucky to have the best friends in the world. Mostly, they live close by (several within a block or so). We try to get together at least once or twice a week for dinner or brunch, shopping, and telling stories that confirm God really does protect children and fools, for we have all been both and have lived to tell about it. We call these friends "the family we chose." Not that there is anything wrong with the families we got stuck with---well, nothing that I could put in print here; one of them might read it! ;)
FAMILY
Although we have no children of our own, between Clay and I, we have 34 neices and nephews. We thoroughly enjoy teasing, terrorizing, and spoiling them, then sending them home when we're done. Just in case Gina reads this, the 34 neices and nephews include Erin and the twins. (Gina is the sister we didn't know about until we found her, and she was just too much fun not to be related)
Since Clay and I have been together, our parents have spent Thanksgiving under the same roof all but 2 years, and that was only because of scheduling conflicts (I just hate working for a living). Also, our folks are only about 45mins away from eac...Expand for more
h other, so it is very convenient to swing by and see both the in-laws on the same trip, especially nice at Christmas. It's always fun and always crazy! We are very lucky to have families that believe and practice unconditional love and acceptance. We both feel loved, accepted, and included by our in-laws. They may not understand, but they accept that we love each other, are committed to each other, and that we are a family. Clay's mother once said, "It's not my job to judge you;it's not my job to understand you; it's my job to love you." Let me tell ya, she does her job incredibly well! If I didn't have the mother I have, I would choose Trudy.
WORDS TO LIVE BY
I feel that if everybody followed these instructions, the world would be a much better place:
1) LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
2) TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WISH TO BE TREATED.
3) REMEMBER, WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND-AND IF IT KNOCKS ON MY DOOR AND ASKS DIRECTIONS, I DON'T MIND GIVIN' 'EM!
FAVORITE QUOTES:
1) It's not how much you've got; it's how LITTLE you paid for it.
2) Don't drink and drive; you might hit a bump and spill your drink.
School
Who was my biggest crush? I won't answer for the protection of the innocent.
Mrs. Sue Campbell, soph/jr english, was the teacher who influence me most. She expected more out of us all, and I hope I delivered.
I would do it all over again IF I could do it with the knowledge and wisdom I have now. hmmmmm.....
College
I should have spent more time in the library, or atleast somewhere I could study. Instead, we took a lot of road trips and drank a lot of beer. I remember going to class on Monday morning after clubbing in OKC all weekend. The confetti and glitter would fall out of my hair and off of my clothes onto the desk and floor. I have a lot of really good memories, but have not stayed in touch with as many as I would have liked to. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
Workplace
I have done a little of everything since graduating. I have worked in ranching/farming, food service, movie theater, bartending, dept stores, fund raising, cabaret, assembly line, party planning, truck driving (local and x-country), and corp headdquarters office job.
Clay and I also started and continue a business. We own an 18 wheeler which he operates. He drives coast to coast, and I stay home and keep up with the bills and paperwork!
I am now in the process of starting another business with a couple friends. It is still in the "are we or aren't we" stage.
Also, I took 1 1/2 yrs off to remodel our home. This was the hardest job I've ever done, and the dirtiest!!
