David's Story
Updated August 16, 2020
My Home:
I live on more than 9 acres in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. That's out in the country, but only 20 miles from the White House, just past Andrews Air Force Base. I don't keep it up as well by myself as my wife and I used to, but I love the privacy and the very different sort of neighborhood. I've got a nice swimming pool and spa, so y'all come, y'hear!
My Kids:
I have two kids from my first marriage, a boy and a girl (now a man and a woman), whom I raised by myself as a custodial single parent for about 15 years. In 2003 I adopted my late (second) wife's two daughters, whom I helped raise from their childhood and who were then in their mid to late twenties! I am proud of all of them. Among them, they have given me 10 wonderful grandchildren, including the 2 then-newborn baby boys my son and daughter-in-law adopted 10 months apart in 2000-2001. I am very lucky.
My Career:
I am an attorney and an economist, retired from the federal government after about 20 on-again/off-again years, with more than that in the private sector and with a territorial government. I still maintain a small law practice and lose money every month on my real estate investments. Bad timing on my part, but I hope the market will turn back up after a bit of pain.
My last federal position was as Executive Secretary of the US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), running the organization that manages the Secretary's correspondence. I have been a US treaty negotiator, represented the US in international meetings on missile technology control, served as general counsel of a small federal commission on international religious freedom, been a US diplomat for 2 years in Afghanistan and 1 year in Mexico, a Congressional staff member, and a member of the governor's cabinet on Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, among other government jobs. Many of these were political appointments under President Reagan and both Bushes.
I started my career in my parents' newspaper (Massapequa Post) and printing business and I've been in and out of private law or consulting practice several times. I also worked in the Pentagon in 1968 just where the plane later hit ...Expand for more
on 9/11/2001 (shudder). I never had any job security, but it's been interesting--still is.
More recently, I took on a case pro bono to represent an Ethiopian woman seeking asylum in the United States who had been raped, jailed, and tortured for her political opinions. While her case was pending, she married an American, citizen, so she got her visa that way.
Academics:
After 2 years as a finance major at Syracuse, I transferred to Wharton (University of Pennsylvania) and picked up an Economics degree, returning to college at night about 20 years later for a JD from George Washington University Law School. I frequently serve as a moot court judge in local, national, and international law student competitions in international law, constitutional law, national security law, and other disciplines. I judged in Venezuela in 2011 and in China in 2013.
Hobbies, etc.:
I love to travel, especially to places I haven't been before. [I visited Antarctica in March 2009, for example, and have been around the world twice, once in each direction.] I am a good cook of gourmet and ethnic cuisines. Unfortunately, I like my own cooking a bit too much. I'm a certified SCUBA diver and used to enjoy hiking, camping, and bicycle riding, although these have been limited in recent years. I swim for exercise now. Of course, I spent quite a bit of time in amateur theater in the Washington, DC, area as both an actor and director, having had leads in three major productions and winning the Best Direction award in the DC One-Act Play tournament--all back in the 70's. Since returning from Saipan in 1982, my work schedules made this impossible. I had hoped to get back into theater but, unfortunately, my health now makes that unlikely. A lot of my time was spent as a community activist, particularly in the area of public education. I also serve on the board of a Jewish community group, and am very active in Mensa where, in 2010, I was elected to a 6-year term as National Ombudsman of that organization. I currently am Ombudsman of Mensa’s Metropolitan Washington chapter and coordinate its teen program.
