I know this sounds too much like a resume. Hey, It has been fun.
David S. Cunningham III graduated from the University of Southern California and received his B.A. in Economics in 1977(summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) where he was a columnist for the university paper and a member of the speech and debate team. Mr. Cunningham also served as a summer fellow in 1976 with the American Economic Association at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois working on macroeconomic models for the U.S. economy. In 1980, Mr. Cunningham graduated from New York University School of Law where he was awarded a Root-Tilden-Kern Public Service Scholarship and was voted regional best advocate in the Frederick Douglas National Moot Court Competition. He received a fellowship to the U.S. AttorneyÂs Office in New York and was a founding member of the law schoolÂs Public Interest Law Foundation, a student based organization founded to fund entry-level positions for attorneys seeking employment in public service oriented organizations.
Mr. Cunningham began his legal career as an attorney in the Honors Program with the United States Department of Justice. After leaving the Justice Department in 1983, Mr. Cunningham clerked for the Honorable Terry J. Hatter, Jr., former presiding judge of the United States District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles. In 1984, Mr. Cunningham joined the Beverly Hills office of the national law firm of Finley, Kumble, Heine, Underberg, Manley & Casey, where he represented the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), in directors and officers liability actions. d the staff of Loyola Law School, where he served as an adjunct professor from 1987 to 1991 teaching a financial institutions class and trial advocacy.
Mr. Cunningham is one of the most experienced and successful eminent domain lawyers in California. He joined Kelly Lytton & Vann LLP in 2005 and brought with him two decades of experience in redevelopment law and condemnation matters. He has handled over 100 eminent domain cases, representing, among others, the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles, the Port of Los Angeles, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Mr. Cunningham has litigated the acquisition of an assortment of properties, including contaminated industrial sites, air rights, commercial and residential buildings, subsurface mineral rights, railroad right-of-ways and special purpose properties. He filed the first Polanco Redevelopment Act case in Los Angeles County Superior Court seeking to recover the costs of remediation of an outdated scrap metal yard for the construction of a new retail shopping center and computer educational learning facility in the heart of the City of Los Angeles.
Mr. Cunningham has served on numerous boards and commissions including the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners from 2001-05 (served as President for two years); the Los Angeles Unified School District Governance Commission from 2005-06 (served as Chairman); the Los Angeles Urban League Board of Directors from 1988-96, the Los Angeles Business Council from 1997-2000, the Watts Health Foundation Community Trust from 1994-1998, and the Board of Directors for the Midnight Mission from 1998 to present.
