David's Story
I came to West Hazleton High School My senior year in September of 1981, a young shy kid from Yonkers, NY, I wore shades all the time, not because I was attempting to be mysterious, but they made a mistake tinting my glasses, so without the funds to correct it we did the right thing - I left NY looking like I did - that made it easier for me.
I never experienced the culture shock that, by all rights, should have happened but I noted a few interesting differences between growing up in Yonkers & living in Drums and going to West Hazleton HS:
Yonkers NY
Sweet smell of tar and asphalt
2 mile walk to school
800+ in my Graduation Class
Dellwood Dairies loading docks down the street
Hudson River fishing
Missed a lot of school (Junior Year)
No Vocationa...Expand for more
l Technical School
Drums/WHHS
1 Acre of grass to cut
Pleasant bus ride (no car)
Not as many
Pecora’s Dairy Farm not too far
Nicest trout streams I had seen back then
Never missed a day
Best welding instruction by Mr. “C”
There are more differences than I put to paper, however by listing these I made a mental note that I was blessed to have had the opportunity to enjoy my senior year when and where I did. I thank all of the folks that included me in their lives.
42 years have passed - I enjoyed a 30 year Naval career, I have a wonderful Wife together for 36 years, Children, Grandkids, house, trout streams (not too far) and some of the best memories to reflect on.
Not to be too sentimental but, looking back, I think maybe my senior year in WHHS is kinda responsible.
Thanks
