David's Story
Life
Retired from the Air Force after 24 yrs. Married twice and divorced twice. Two kids - 32 yr daughter and 27 yr son. Spent 7 yrs in Maine, 8 yrs in Germany and then 9 in Illinois. I then worked as a defense contractor serving the Air Force overseas. I lived in Manama, Bahrain in the sunny and hot Persian Gulf for almost two and a half years. I got to go where ever they needed me (like a month living in a tent in the northern Saudi Arabian desert) and experience whatever life had to throw at me - as long as it wasn't some lunatic with explosives wrapped around his chest. After experiencing Europe and now the Middle East, I can say without a doubt, the US definitely has more to offer. If you want to live like Fred Flintstone, try living in the Middle East.
I'm happy to say that I was able to secure a job back in Illinois near my kids. It seems I'm destined to serve the US Air Force all of my adult life. I was hired on as civil service as a cell supervisor for AMC's Regional Supply Sqd in 2005. Since then the unit and the Air Force have changed considerably. When I was hired, it was to help manage support equipment for 12 AMC bases. Now our unit has expanded and transitioned into a larger unit. We now manage 114 bases worldwide and over the next two years, my equipment management flight will become its own squadron as we take on the management of support equipment for all USAF bases. Talk about a challenge. Since 2017 I moved up to HQ Air Mobility Command to work in the same job I did at the time of my retirement from active duty in 2002.
I've been able to get back into scouting and now serve as an Assistant District Commissioner for East Belleville working with 16 cub scout, boy scout and venture units. I was able to see my son make Eagle Scout and then join the ranks as an adult scouter. I enjoy spending what time I can with my kids when our schedules allow it. I am a member of American Legion Post 2007 working with...Expand for more
other veterans to help and support area veterans. I serve as a security member for my church and serve as treasurer of the US Security Forces Association's Gateway Chapter.
Workplace
After 24 years in the AF, I moved on to working for a defense contractor in the Middle East. I spent 2 1/2 years working in Manama, Bahrain in an office/warehouse environment which is responsible for the deep storage of US Air Force equipment that is pre-positioned there. I was finally able to return to civilization to work for the Air Force directly (again), but this time in civil service. I now work in the Air Force Sustainment Center as the Strategic Cell supervisor in Equipment Management.
Military
It was an experience with plenty of highs and lows but definitely worthwhile. From walking wingtip to wingtip on on a nuke loaded B-52 in -20F weather with blowing snow to superintendent of a major command's equipment management program, it gave me a wide perspective on life in the military. It also allowed me opportunities that I never would be able to do otherwise, like camping in the Swiss Alps, visiting Berlin and Prague, seeing the pyramids in Egypt and standing on top of Masada in Israel as well as walking the cliffs of Normandy in France. Of course there are the memories that have seared themselves into my mind that will be hard to forget. Walking through the still smoldering remains of a C-5 cargo aircraft after it crashed on takeoff in Germany. The sight of vehicles parked on the ramp in front of my workplace the morning after the Flugtag disaster in 1988 when the Italian fighter plowed into the crowd, the owners never coming back to claim their cars. Like I said, highs and lows. The friendships that I made 24 years ago are still there and many being reaffirmed with the creation of the Loring Ramprat Association for anyone who served with the 42nd Security Police Squadron. You can't beat the military for that kind of camaraderie.
