David's Story

Life It’s hard to believe I’m old enough to have aircraft I flew in museums, but it’s happened. A Beechcraft T34-C TurbineMentor I flew as a student in VT-2 is now a static display aircraft on a stick in Brewton, Alabama and a Kaman SH-2F Seasprite I flew in HSL-30 is on display at a museum in Ruston, Louisiana. After over 30 moves in 42 years, in 2006, I made what I hope will be my final move to a small town near Orlando, FL. After High School, I returned to New Orleans for college at Tulane University where I earned my BS in Psychology and a commission in the Navy through the NROTC program and then spent 20 1/2 years in the Navy and Navy Reserve. While in the Navy, I flew the SH-2F Seasprite helicopter out of Norfolk, VA and served on two sea duty staffs in Charleston, SC and Norfolk, VA. I finished my Active Duty career as a helicopter flight instructor at Whiting Field near Pensacola, FL. I went in the Navy Reserve in 1998 and returned to graduate school at the University of West Florida for my MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I finished my degree and had started a Doctoral program in Performance Technology when I was recalled to Active Duty as a helicopter flight instructor. During the recall, I was selected for Commander and screened for aviation command. I developed vertigo in 2003 which ended my flying career and started a long period of physical evaluations and attempts to cure my vertigo. While the Navy tried to cure me, I served in a Reserve NATO unit near Atlanta and got to go to London for 3 weeks t...Expand for more
o participate in a NATO exercise. When the Navy was unable to cure my vertigo, I was medically retired in October, 2006 and permanently retired in October, 2024. I moved to the Orlando area in 2006 (who knows, maybe I’ll get to stay here awhile). I stayed active in aviation developing helicopter and fixed wing training systems for Lockheed Martin. I served as the Courseware Lead for the VH-71 Presidential Helicopter Program and as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Republic of Singapore Air Force Basic Wings Training program. I also worked as an SME for the Royal Saudi Arabian Air Force Weapon Systems Operator training program. My final project at Lockheed Martin had me developing flight training courseware and mission simulations for the UKMFTS training program. After leaving Lockheed Martin, I worked for General Dynamics in Orlando as a Human Performance Technologist (I/O Psychologist) on a DCMA training program and performed training needs analyses for multiple government agencies including the VA. In 2015, my vertigo symptoms made it impossible to continue working on scrolling computer screens. I turned 60 in late 2024 qualified for my Navy Reserve retirement. I am now fully retired and practicing photography and other hobbies in Central Florida. I have also been asked to take over duties as keeper of the Kaman Seasprite email list server and All Hands Roster. I enjoy getting back in touch with former class and shipmates. After a four year break, I rejoined Facebook, I can also be reached on yahoo with davesspamtrap
