David E.'s Story

I was born in Elwood, Indiana being raised in Tipton till age 14. I attended Jefferson, 3rd Ward, Lincoln, and Tipton Jr. High. Moved to Phoenix, AZ in May 1960 and enrolled at North High School. In High School I was active in ROTC which did truly shape my future. While I had planned from age 5 to have a Military Career, I got side tracked into business and while I served in both the National Guard and the ARMY Reverse, I have always been sorry that I did not get my commission and make a go at a career, I obtained the rank of First Sgt. E-7 and served in Military Police, and for a short period as a Drill Sgt. I have great respect for all Military Persons and thank you for serving. In 1968 I married a classmate of whom I did not even know existed when in school and shortly after lost my friend, Skip Thompson, in an auto accident. We were married for 14 years and have three wonderful children, Tammy, Candace, and David Jr. In 1984 I married my beautiful wife of now 28 years and we had two more daughters, Christina and Rebecca. My work career was in Retail General Management and I retired from Target Stores in Feb. 1998, suffered some permanent disability but God has been good to me and we have a great life. We currently live in Menifee, CA having been in Redding for 20 yrs. where business took us in 1989 and had stayed there to let the girls finished school. Christina graduated Point Loma University May 2008 and starting her work career. Becky graduated at Pt. Loma University May 2010 and now she is at Mt. St. Mary's College in LA to half way to her Doctorate Program in Physical Therapy. Tammy is a Quality Control Executive for a large bio tech company in San Diego, Candace is a house wife with 4 children in AZ, and graduated with an AA and then completed her BS in nursing and got pinned as an RN Dec 2011. David Jr. was a High School Counselor with his Masters Degree in Counseling and Guidance and with three children in Victorville, CA. On March 31, 2005 our world was turned upside down as David Jr. died from a cardiac event suffered on March 22. He left behind a wife, two little girls and David III born April 22, 2005; just three weeks after his Daddy died. I am not sure how we recover from this, except to care for his wife and children. God has been good through all of this and guides our way with the hope of eternity together. I have 11 grandchildren, 7 of my own and 4 additional now through the marriage of my son's wife. Life is short, with the loss of my mother in Oct. 2002 and my son without warning in 2005, and then my father in June 2011, I would like to catch up with old friends. We now live close to all our children and grandchildren and only 5 hrs to Phoenix. Hope to hear from you and look forward to seeing some of you soon and starting to look forward to class reunions at both Tipton High School in Indiana and North High in Phoenix for 50th in 2014, God being willing. God Bless you All. School I had two years, 1957-58/1958-60 at Tipton Jr. High. Would love to here from friends in Indiana. I have regular contact with four classmate now, Max Carter, Cathy James, Charles Tiddler and Ron Smith. I attended North Phoenix High School in Phoenix, AZ for 4 years 1960-1964 and loved every minute of it. For me ROTC was key. As a kid I had always watched a weekly series on West Point and wanted to join the Army. I knew nothing of ROTC until the first time the guys wore the uniform and I checked it out and joined. The activities were very good, every one did not always treat the ROTC cadets nice but never bothered me and had lots of friends, many of which went on to serve our Country as high ranking commissioned officers in key positions. I am very proud of all of them. My Sr. year I served as the Battalion Commander for North and for a period of time covering our city wide Military Ball I was the Brigade Commander for 5 schools and had a great time supported by a great st...Expand for more
aff and a outstanding group of elected queens and sponsors. The leadership training and decision making served all well. Many of these guys ending up in Nam and I am extremely proud of every one them to included my brother Paul Raines, and good friend Capt. Larry O'Daniel who served so honorably and many others. God Bless you all. North High and the students and teachers will always be a high point in my life. I am happy to have contact with many of you and hope to find more class mates. I currently communicate with about 20 of my classmates for North. College I attended Arizona State part time from 1964-1968, did not graduate or finish a degree at any point. I had joined to National Guard for the purpose of having time in so I would be higher in the pay scale when I got my commission. I was working full time going to school and then married in March 1968 and was already a General Manger for a Retail Company that insisted I had to move to Washington State. At the end of the school year I took the promotion to District Mgr. and move to Yakima, WA and school was over for me, except for the school of Hard Knocks. Workplace Out of high school through first semester at ASU I did things from fast food to shoe sales and worked as a gold plater of parts for Motorola. I then joined the National Guard and left for active duty in May 1965. My training in the Army was as a Military Police, then in 1968 when I moved to Yakima, WA, I had to join a Reserve unit where I became a Drill Sgt. at Fort Lewis part time. After working in Washington I returned to AZ and moved 18 time between 1968-1989 with retails management assignments, opening several new stores. I worked for TG&Y Family Centers for 14 years then finish off my career with Target Stores as General Mgr. since Feb. 1985. I have lived in Phoenix and Tucson AZ, Yakima, WA and in California in the cities of Escondido, Goleta, Santa Barbara, Santa Paula, Oxnard, Ventura, Yuba City and Redding among others. Military, I spent time at Fort Polk, LA and Fort Gordon, GA. Currently I am enjoying retirement in Menifee, CA. Military I joined the Arizona National Guard in Feb. 1965, shipped to Ft. Polk, LA for basic training, then on to Ft. Gordon, GA for Military Police School. I served with Brigade HQ. and the Commanding General of Arizona State National Guard with a rank of First Sgt. E7. When I moved to Washington State the only unit I could get into was a Reserve Unit in which I had to take the roll of a Drill Sgt doing drills and Summer Camp at Ft. Lewis. I later returned to the Arizona National Guard. I had spent 4 years in Jr. ROTC and almost 2 years at University level ROTC being a part of Pershing Rifles and this jump started my time in the Military. I started Basic as a E3 vs. the enlistment of E1, was Spec.4 going into Military Police School and E5 shortly after returning to my units after active duty. ROTC was worth every minute for that purpose alone. No KP, No Guard Duty, and only person in the unit that could get a pass or leave training area during basic. My CO at Military Police school had an ROTC commission and we hit off real well. I loved my active duty time and camps. Wish the Retail Management had not created a conflict, I would have stayed in. Today I am retired, and work a lot of hours on Genealogy, travel, and spend time with family, and my church. Genealogy is a great passion started by my father but I have loss some interest with so many brick walls and the death of my father, and I am finding that many I have crossed paths with over the years are related and didn't know it. The history in it is very interesting, and so much fun. I retired Jan. 2009 and in May of 2009 moved to Menifee, CA to be near children, grandchildren and just 5 hours from family in Phoenix. My memory is becoming somewhat difficult but I keep trying and memory of my school and work friends is still pretty good and my family is just GREAT!
