David's Story
Life
I lived in and around New Buffalo from about 1956 until April of 1969. I got drafted into the Army. I quickly went to Franklin Street in Michigan City. The slick tounged recruiter in the beautiful white uniform talked me into joining the Navy, and see the world. Well, first I saw two tours to Vietnam where we got shot at nearly every day we were there. I spent the next 24 years going around the world. The Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, North Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, Gulf of Tonken, South China Sea, I did two WestPacs to VietNam, and Five med cruises. I served aboard various ships and shore commands. I was in the North Atlantic/Fjords, England, Italy Napels/Genoa/Triest/Rome and the Vatican to see the Pope), Rota = Cadiz/Valencia/Malorca (Spain) Palermo/Sicily, Palma De Mallorca, . I have been through both the Pamana Canal and three times through the Suez Canal. I have been to Djibouti, Dubai/UAE, Kuwait, Yeman, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Grand Cayman Islands , Port A Rico, Guantanamo (about 10 times), Mombassa (Kenya), Da Nang, St. Thomas (Virgin Islands three times), Vancouver BC, Mexico, Bahamas, Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Aqaba/Jordan, Egypt, Hong Kong, Tokyo/Sasebo/Japan, Bangcok, Taiwan, Cadiz/Malaga/Valencia/Spain, sicilli, Nova Scotia, New Orleans (twice), Adak, Alaska (in December!!!), Transited Panama Canal to Ohau, Hawaii (Pearl and Ford Island), Guam, Midway Island, Philipines, Bearing Se...Expand for more
a, Corinth/Athens/Pompai/Greece, Marseille/Cannes/Nice/ France, Palma, Tunisia, Bahrain, Porto Torres/Sardinia. I probably missed some. Have I learned anything from my travels? Yep - Keep a journal and right on the back of the pictures. I am married (39 years) with three grown children. I have an AS degree in Science, BS degree in Occupational Therapy. My lovely wife is a Registerd Nurse. I attended New Buffalo Elementary and NB High School. Years I enjoyed, but wish now I would have studied harder. Some friends I remember and hung out with, but have not seen on the class register are: Jimmy, Janice and Mary Hall, Billy and Betty Benson (an old girlfriend), Richard Pain, Larry and Danny Mateland, Ronny Dabbs, Margaret Dabbs, Gary Collins, Cousins Peggy, Paul, and Kyle Osborne,Caroline Hicks and of course my brother and best friend Eddie. I remember faces better than names. In the eighth grade I thought I was in love with Vicky Sandstrom (she never new I existed). I remember Nick's Lunch(next to the school) Frank's Tavern, The Log Cabin, Lots of Street Dances, and our old Beach gatherings of music and dance down by the river. I drove a two door Lavander, 1965 Chevy Corvair, Corsa all over town, along with an old Green 1953 Ford F-100. Classmates.com brings back a lot of memories for me and some I could forget.
