David's Story

Life Mr. Hotaling's biology class at George Washington Sr High on Guam in sophomore year inspired me to get a bio degree at UOG and try for a master's at the UOG Marine Lab. Taught English at Bishop Baumgartner Junior High in Sinajana before getting a gig to teach bio and science at J.F.K in Tumon. The 1981 strike forced me to head for the mainland (my wife to be --Theresa Moran--teacher at Sanchez--also left the island). We got married in December that year. Lived in New Mexico --Alamogordo, Albuquerque; before moving out to California--where I have worked as a technical writer for Livermore National Laboratory, NASA, Cisco Systems, Veritas Software, Vormetric Data Security, Fujitsu Networking Communications, NetGear, Juniper Networks, and others in the San Francisco Bay Area. I now own my own business as a representative for Pre-Paid Legal Services and as a consulting editor/writer for business, documentation, and educational services. I do freelance writing and photography as well. And have finally set up my online shops at cafepress*dot*com *slash* shashinyadave1 through 50 (substitute the characters for the stuff in the asterisks *smile* and use 1 through 50 for my fifty --so far--stores). The job market is getting weirder by the minute in Silicon Valley and California in general. So, online is the way to go, right? Thinking about selling everything and heading back out to the Pacific... Palau maybe? Perhaps Australia? I also want to visit Russia (to try out my Russian language ability and to explore a place I've always heard about but which was always sort of a mystery to me). I have managed to return to the Philippines via Hong Kong and Japan via Taiwan -- took my wife and daughter there on extended vacations -- never made it back to Guam -- the island that I love. Now that both kids are pretty much on their own and have moved out of the house (yup..we're grandparents now) ... it's time for us to just enjoy life and travel and explore... and to get back in touch with all of our friends from the past and make more friends for the future. School Had fun in kindergarten and 1rst grade. Miserable through 9th grade. Had fun and a real social life through high school. Although bullies made my life miserable in my early school years (elementary through junior high), I figured out how to deflect the stupidity by the time I got to high school, and thus made high school my realm. College Lonely and not much social life in college. Found the gal I married (Theresa) in college while working on my Master's Degree in Marine Biology (never finished it) after becoming a public school teacher on Guam. Still married to her--and we homeschooled our two kids for the whole 12 years each....Expand for more
Probably would have done things differently in college if I could do it again. Workplace Not many jobs can accommodate the things I enjoy doing--speaking, reading, and writing Japanese and Russian; outdoors and marine biology in particular; photography and art (drawing/watercolor); teaching; creative writing; traveling; visiting with people of many different cultures--particularly those in the Pacific Rim countries. Being a technical writer has allowed me to combine many of these things--I've worked with the NASA Space Station Project's Gravitational Biology Facility where I worked with Russian and Japanese scientists and engineers. I worked at Cisco Systems--a premier networking connectivity company. And have worked for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory--with lasers and environmental safety. I've edited fellow writers' novels (5 of which have been published). I'm working on my own novel and an autobiography (started with a memoir of my 12 years on Guam). Still want to do some traveling--would love to go to Europe, and also the former Soviet Union... Moscow, St Petersburg, Novosibirsk, and so on. I still play with martial arts (have a blue belt in Gojyu-Ryu karate and a green belt in TaeKwonDo). Both of my kids are now black belts in TaeKwonDo and blue belts in Shaolin Kenpo. They appeared on the front cover of the 2005 Black Belt Buyer's Guide put out by Black Belt Magazine. Sort of cool--since we didn't expect or know that the photographer would do that. (Except they didn't get paid for it--but the moment of fame was nice.) My kids are now both over 18... so Theresa (my wife) and I have a lot of time to ourselves (sort of). The kids have moved out of the house--my son is now married, just got out of 10 years in the US Air Force, and has a 15-yr-old daughter and 3 step-kids. My daughter is a corporate flight attendant and has visited every continent in the world except for Antarctica -- 5 countries in Africa, 5-6 countries in Asia, 6-10 countries in Europe, 3 countries in South America, Australia, and some countries in Central America. She's always in the air. Empty nest syndrome is setting in for me and my wife, I guess. I've met a lot of my old Classmates and work buddies through classmates... and I like keeping in touch with everyone. Well, I had to update this blurb a bit to include stuff that has happened since I first signed up for Classmates. And now, you used to be able to find me and a bunch of our classmates on FB but I got hacked and then subsequently shut-down on FB. I'm on LI, however ... at LI (dot) com (slash) in (slash) editordave. . Anyone wanting to remember the "good 0l' days" on Guam or Alamogordo, drop me a note... I always enjoy keeping in touch.
