David's Story
I really have no idea as to why anyone I went to school with would miss me. Cuz' like .... I really do not miss any of them. Is anyone really interested ??????....... look me up on the great BOOK of FACEs.....
My present career opportunity IS in the same field as I chose in my teen years and it, at times, takes me far afield.
As I write this, I am sitting in hotel room in Sudbury, Ontario, overseeing the night shift crew on the rebuild of a ball mill in one of INCO's plants... I thought about what got me here.
I had already been playing with tools of the trade for all my formative years and, upon finishing with high school, I discovered that I could be well paid doing the same thing. I had a welding ticket before turning 19 and, for several years I worked in heavy construction. I became a certified millwright in 1978 & I went on to become lead millwright in a plywood mill; working there for 25 years until the industry tanked. I was able to draw on my past experience in the heavy construction industry & I landed a job as a field engineering technician with my present employer, METSO, a global supplier of equipment for the mining industry (as well as many other industries).
I made the great escape from the Lower mainland in 1979, buying areag...Expand for more
e with a (now 35 year old) bungalow and a space to build a big shop, in the North Okanagan area, where I live to this day... Also, somewhere in amongst all of that career stuff, I raised a family. I have one son and two daughters, all grown and gone, as well as one grauddaughter and two grandsons. The career path took its toll on the personal life though.... after the kids left home, so did the mother... so.... just me left at home now.... along with the cats the Harleys and the hotrods.
And yeah!...I still play with hotrods & Harleys. I've set a few speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats over the years- my personal fastest being 216.695mph. The records qualified me for life membership in the Bonneville 200 MPH Club... The car has gotten a few other team members into the Club as well with our fastest record being set at 254.153mph and a fastest one way time of over 258mph..... in a Chevy Vega!
I built a new car- a long wheelbase dragster style car for Bonneville a few years ago. It (and the team and I) were featured on a National Geographic documentary called Salt Flat Speedway, which periodically airs on Discovery, National Geographic and other networks. I know when it has recently aired as I get emails about it...
Thats all for now.
