David's Story
Life
It's been a long road from my crazy days on the old plains of Nebraska to where I'm at now. I currently reside in Rhode Island and I'm a proud member of this country's greatest military service, the United States Coast Guard. I moved from Sutherland, Nebraska to Virginia in 1987, my senior year, as most of you may remember. From there I graduated on schedule in 1988, but just barely. Skipping school in Virginia isn't nearly as hard to do as it is in Nebraska. I held a few odd jobs until deciding to join the Coast Guard on June 25, 1990. I made the decision as an attempt to find a more secure way of supporting my new wife, Lesley Kaye Woodward (now Grubb), and soon to be first born son. We were (and still are) happily married on November 24, 1990. That first born child, a son, is named Damien and he graciously came to us on June 19, 1991, five days before I entered boot camp. From boot camp the Coast Guard thought a sea going Buoy Tender (a 180 foot vessel that worked aids to navigation) in Astoria, Oregon would be a good first billet (job) for us. From there I went off to Marine Science Technician "A" School in 1994 and took my first rated position at Marine Safety Office Puerto Rico. Yep, you heard me right, San Juan, Puerto Rico was our next stop. We were there from 1994-1996 and our second son was born while we stationed there, his name is Dylan (his birth certificate is in spanish and subtitled in english). After that we transferred back to Lesleys home town in Virginia and I worked at Coast Guard Head Quarters in Washington, DC for approximately two years. From there we were stationed in Staten Island, NY and I picked up another two ranks while in that four year position (E-5 and E-6). From there we headed just a short bit a way to a small Marine Safety Field Office in Coram, NY but resided at Coast Guard Station Fire Island. were still impacted but not nearly as dramatically as we would have be if we remained on Staten Island. We did two years in Long Island and I picked up one of the biggest rank designations in the Coast Guard, E-7 (Chief Petty Officer). From there it was either Toledo, Ohio, or Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Having not much of a choice we opted to go to Baton Rouge, LA. We were there for three years and yes we were there for hurricane Katrina and Rita. Being in Baton Rouge saved us from the horrific images seen of New Orleans at that time but the impact was still very dramatic for us, nonetheless. That was just a three year stint and I picked up another very significant promotion while being there. I attained the rank of officer (Chief Warrant Officer) and from there we moved up here to Warwick, Rhode Island in July 2006. So far everything is going great and we're all doing very well. Damien successfully passed all his classes and will be a Junior in High School next year. Dylan did very well also and will be moving into his first year of Junior High School. Lesley is, and has been, excelling as a Veterinary Technician for the last four years. The loss the Veterinary in Baton Rouge felt from her departure is still being felt and her current employer has quickly realized the asset she is and will continue to be. We have two cats, two dogs, two cars (currently searching for a third for Damien as he just turned 16, yikes), my 2003 Fatboy Harley Davidson, and a detached single family home in Warwick, RI. We anticipate being here for at least another three years and after that I'll be eligible for retirement at twenty years. My love for the Coast Guard will probably have me continuing on until they see fit to force me to retire or thirty years, whichever comes first. So in 2010 who knows where you might find us. My hobbies are golfing, mountain biking, hunting (anything outdoors really), movies, beer connoisseur, traveling, dining out, reading, and motorcycling.
