David's Story
Way out here at the tail-end of my life it is hard to look back and see the person I was when I last saw any of my classmates. It¿s so far back that I have to squint; even then my view us distorted by the context lens of everything that has happened since.
At 70 I am a writer and have been for some time now ¿ actually for about 50 of my 70 years. No, I am not a novelist. I do have several started, but I doubt that I will ever finish them. I am too busy writing everything else. I have been involved in marketing for more than half my life. Writers better have a ¿day job¿ or learn to live on Ramen noodles. Aside from a 17 stretch, when I worked for Procter & Gamble (To this day I don¿t know why they hired me!), I have pretty much done my own thing and gotten away with it.
I discovered the Internet in the late 80s and by the mid 90s was working as a ghostwriter for many of the so-called marketing GURUs, most of whom couldn¿...Expand for more
t string six words together to form a sentence. That bothered me. I thought back to my early days when Miss Compton shook her head and sadly informed me that I would never be a writer because I couldn¿t learn to parse a sentence. I STILL can¿t parse a sentence, nor do I want to. I finally realized that most people think they can¿t write because they also have a Miss Compton somewhere in their past.
I started working with some of these non-writers and soon found out that I could teach them to write by first telling them to, ¿Forget everything you ever learned in English class,¿ and then pointing them in the right direction. I also found that I really enjoyed teaching. That¿s what I am doing now. I coach people on every continent and love every minute of it!
So, the guy who may still hold the record for the most days skipped has come full circle. I never miss a day of school now. I have finally found a reason to show up.
