David's Story

It's October 2009 and life is good. There's nothing like surviving cancer to make one appreciate the life we have. Every day is more precious. My wonderful wife Karyn and I enjoy our days together and keep two spoiled cats as companions. Married in 1986, we've lived in Washington since 1989 when I started working at Aerojet in Redmond, WA. Before that I worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. Some of you may remember that over one summer I turned a decrepit VW bug into a dune buggy. Realizing how impractical that vehicle was, I sold it two years later. The next car was a used, 1971 VW fastback. It died and was brought back to life (it's a long and funny story, isn't it John Skrypa?) on the honeymoon with my now ex-wife. Not too surprisingly, I'll never own another VW. at first colonoscopy, which doctors recommend that you have when you turn 50. I'm living proof as to why you should do that. Going in with no symptoms, we were shocked when the doctors discovered a tumor growing in my colon. That I had no symptoms is why everyone should go in for this screening. Colon cancer is called the silent killer for good reason. I was handed an opportunity to get my life back. Surgery and six months of chemo was a humbling experience. Support from Karyn, our families and our community of friends helped me through that marathon ordeal. The tests continue to show no more cancer. So that's my "unique" ordeal amongst the other million Americans who were diagnosed with cancer last year. What would you find me doing when I'm not working? a) Boating in the Puget Sound, b) getting ready to go boating, c) cleaning up after boating, or d) thinking about boating! Somehow, I squeeze in a few minutes for ham radio. My call sign is KJ7PF. Drop me a line, I'd be delighted to reconnect with old friends!
