David's Story

Life David M. Klein. Dr. Klein has served the last 10 years as the Artistic Director of Dekalb School of the Arts(DSA)--a major performing arts magnet school in Atlanta. At DSA he directs numerous productions, teaches acting classes and provides vision and leadership for the entire arts/production program. Since graduating with a doctorate in theater from Florida State University in 1995, he has led a successful and fulfilling life as an artist/educator. An active participant in the Atlanta professional theatre scene, he made his Atlanta professional directing debut with Not Merely Players’ innaugural production of “Straightaway Dangerous”in 2003. A critical success, the Journal-Constitution called "Straightaway Dangerous" a top 10 theatre event in Atlanta and The Southern Voice hailed it the Best Play of 2003. He hopes to restage the production for a second run in Atlanta and a subsequent run in New York City. However he made his off-off-off Broadway directing debut in 2002, mounting “Man To Man” for Laughing Dog Theatre in upper Manhattan. In Atlanta, he has acted as Von Helsing in Soul-stice Rep’s “Dracula” and coached voice and dialects for Dad’s Garage Theatre’s production of “Out of the Trees,” by Graham Chapman. In the 2004-2005 theatre season he directed "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" for Atlanta Classical Theatre. Notably, in August of 06 David toured his production of "43 Plays for 43 Presidents" to the International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland where it met with glowing European reviews. More recently he has been seen in "M. Butterfly" at OnStage Atlanta and participating in the national "365 plays for 365 days" event with the Process theatre. He hails from Tallahassee, where, in addition to extensive work as a director and an actor for community, university and professional theaters, he was one of the founding artists of the Southern Shakespeare Festival, a regional event that performed for up to 35,000 people...Expand for more
